How to 3D-Model a Trammel of Archimedes in Fusion 360 | 3D Print a Do-Nothing Machine

By the end of this video, you’ll know how to create a Trammel of Archimedes in Fusion 360. The Trammel of Archimedes is a mechanism that generates the shape of an ellipse.

Some have even coined the machines to be the “do-nothing machine” as their pretty pointless [pun intended] when they have a knob on the end. Usually, they have a pencil or knife attached to the end so one can draw, scribe, or cut an ellipse into a surface underneath.

These are great little projects for woodworking or 3D printing, and kids seem to love them, so I thought this would be a fun object to model in Fusion 360.

There were several concepts I have always wanted to know or understand about fusion 360 that I learned from this one video. Thank you.

I know I'm a little late here on this design. Took a long time to get to this point in learning 360. I want to modify it as suggested and print it. Thank you Kev

I'm using F360 for the first time to create a specific part to 3D print. As an intermediate 3D modeler with a lot of experience with 3D printers, I'm pretty up to speed with a lot of the concepts used in CAD modeling. After 2-3 days into this project, I'm finding it much quicker and more informative to just watch one of your videos that seem like they would cover the F360 function that I'm struggling with rather than go onto the community forums and search for answers. Inevitably I learn a better way to approach something that I've already cobbled together and have restarted my project several times to fix things along the way. Thanks for putting up such concise and well-explained videos. I'm still watching at 1.75 or 2x speed (with liberal use of the pause button), but it's so nice not to have to click through all of the exposition that is present in so many of the other tutorial videos.

I really don't understand how you don't have a lot more subscribers.
Thanks for your effort to teach us on very easy to understand way without pointing out how useless we are :)

Thank Kevin for this great video, like all your other videos from elsewhere. It's with your videos that I'm learning Fusion 360. It's the best videos I've seen on the Internet because you get to the bottom of things and take the time to explain your actions. I will continue to watch your tutorials.

Thank you very much, Kevin, your tutorials are the best! I began learning F360 with your "30 days" tutorials and keep getting something new with your upcoming videos.

Thanks a ton for this. Ever since I got a 3d printer, I've had a desire to understand mechanical designs. Your tutorials help so much.

Excellent material. Loving these videos. Compared to other tutorial series, they seem perfectly paced, and very slick and easy follow. Thank you!!

I've been teaching myself F360 for the past couple of weeks using online tutorials. A lot of things are different in the new version of the software so it's been a challenge but I have always learned through experimentation.

I printed this and it turned out pretty good. I used the settings Kevin suggested. Printed on a Anycubic Vyper.

I'm never going to print this but this showed me a lot of things in fusion 360 that I would like to learn.

The portion of the bar between the sliders is the hypotenuse of a triangle. The two sliders give sine/cosine of the angle described by the handle.

I am teaching myself Fusion 360, and stumbled upon your channel. You have a great way of teaching so that anyone can follow along. The only issue I am having is that my Fusion doesnt seem to follow along exactly the same way that yours does. I realize this is a fairly old video, and that is most likely the cause, but specifically when you are creating the arm portion, my fusion looks completely different. This is creating some confusion. I just realized that this is probably a pretty pointless comment as well, since i dont even really know what to ask to get a better understanding. First thing i guess is that when i create a different component and select it, all of my other components become almost invisible.
