On Wednesday, 19th Sha’ban, 1039 H., heavy rainfall swept Makkah Al-Mukarramah and continued up till Thursday evening. This caused torrential flooding, never before seen in Makkah. The Holy Mosque was heavily affected by the rains which reached up to the middle of the wall of the Ka’bah, consequently the walls collapsed one after the other.
The Ottoman Sultan, Murad Khan, began to reconstruct the Ka’bah after the rainfall in the year 1040 H.
For that, he used local material from the mountains of Makkah, to form the bricks that would be used for the Ka’bah.
This mountain is located on the north western side of the Haram
In the mid 90s, the Ka’bah underwent a huge renovation project, where the bricks were modified and reshaped.
A thorough study of the types of rocks used in the Sacred House and a comparison of the rocks of Makkah’s well-known mountains were conducted. Samples of rocks, resembling the rocks of the Holy Ka’bah, were ground and a paste was made of them in order to analyse geological properties. Some adhesive materials that gave more solidity to the basic rocks were used to cover the exterior surfaces of the stones. Then the surfaces were roughened to match the surfaces of the other original rocks.
That’s why, the external wall of the Ka’bah looks like a new building, but it really isn’t… it’s just a modified wall.
