Dire Straits - Money For Nothing
Album: Brothers In Arms
Year: 1985
Lyrics:
Now look at them yo-yo's that's the way you do it
You play the guitar on the MTV
That ain't working that's the way you do it
Money for nothing and chicks for free
Now that ain't working that's the way you do it
Let me tell you them guys ain't dumb
Maybe get a blister on your little finger
Maybe get a blister on your thumb

We gotta install microwave ovens
Custom kitchen deliveries
We gotta move these refrigerators
We gotta move these colour TV's

See the little faggot
With the earring and the make up
Yeah buddy that's his own hair
That little faggot got his own jet airplane
That little faggot he's a millionaire

We gotta install microwave ovens
Custom kitchens deliveries
We gotta move these refrigerators
We gotta move these colour TV's

I should've learned to play the guitar
I should've learned to play them drums
Look at that mama, she got it sticking in the camera
Man we could have some fun
And he's up there, what's that? Hawaiian noises?
Banging on the bongoes like a chimpanzee
That ain't working that's the way you do it
Get your money for nothing get your chicks for free

We gotta install microwave ovens
Custom kitchen deliveries
We gotta move these refrigerators
We gotta move these colour TV's, Lord

Now that ain't working that's the way you do it
You play the guitar on the MTV
That ain't working that's the way you do it
Money for nothing and your chicks for free
Money for nothing and chicks for free

I was on a construction job (electrician) for a large, household name, internet firm. Our break area was in a large open area of the building. As the job progressed we had to move the break area... Tables, chairs, microwaves, refrigerators, and 2 large monitors that displayed job metrics and the ubiquitous safety blurbs...

So I spent an entire afternoon moving and reinstalling refrigerators, microwave ovens, and color TV's... And I sang this song the whole time.

The riff that every guitarist, every band, and every artist wishes they wrote... Period

Born in 61 and experienced music from the 50s 60s and 70s! Never a better time to be alive with my radio in my hand! So creative, so unique!

I have seen Dire Straits live twice
Mark Knopfler is a boss
It's no coincidence that a lot of high end stereo equipment is demoed with Dire Straits music

Just the way I remembered it on the radio years ago. Was starting to think I was imagining there was more to it than you hear these days. Thank you

It introduced (what then) were cutting edge computer graphics, Sting on backing vocals, and a killer hook.. MTV rocked back then!

Still hands down one of my favorite songs, remember singing this song with my mom in the car in the 90’s. Now my kids do it in 2022🤍 proud moment when they can sing the whole song not just radio edited.

How can you not like this song? It's sung by a great musician, has Sting on vocals, and has some of the best guitar work I haven't heard in a long while.
