As a Microsoft--based tech stack developer, it frustrates me to see Microsoft work so hard to make even the most die-hard fans want to jump ship. My livelihood is dependent on Microsoft, but even I can see their days are numbered. They are working ever so hard at pushing people off their platform. I've never wanted to learn Linux so much in my life and I have zero doubt that if I don't, I will be out of a job within 5-10 years (unless I want to spend the rest of my career support legacy Windows applications).

"at the mercy of the staggering incompetence that Microsoft routinely shows" - LOL Gold. Glad other people feel this way.
I miss Windows 7 and a version of Outlook that didn't take 5 minutes to do just about anything.

I agree Linux is poised to be the best option for Nvidia to create an ecosystem for their CPUs & GPUs on client devices.
However Nvidia has a disadvantage to AMD & Intel with Linux as well. Nvidia has managed to burn many bridges with Linux developers with their closed source drivers and proprietary CUDA tooling. Meanwhile AMD and Intel do an excellent job providing open source support, both with code, and with their willingness to work honestly through Linux's distributed development model.
Nvidia may believe they can repeat the success of Android - creating a closed ecosystem on top of an open base. But they haven't taken the right first steps to courting outside developers in such an environment.

well the one positive out of all of this is that they might actually get ARM CPUs right for windows

You were rooting for the ARM acquisition.... I don't get it. Sure, ARM would have a huge resource injection, but we know NVIDIAs anti-consumer and anticompetitive behaviours. All it would do is strengthen that ....eventually ARM would fall prey to NVIDIAs controlling behaviour. It's not creating better competition all around, only strengthening one of the current big players, and harming smaller companies relying on ARM. I think your faith in what ARM could have become under Nvidia is misplaced. All previous evidence suggests it wouldn't have ended well. If it was almost any other company I'd have said yeah, this could be good. The outcome was so likely to be bad, I wonder whether you just say these things to be controversial so people comment on your vids. Well I guess it works.

it took over one year for nivida to release the firmware for the RTX 30 series for Linux. Even if they would do that faster, there closed source approacch speaks fundamently against Linux. The current Linux drivers are a mess and the advantage AMD gained when it started actively supporting Open Source will be hard to match. Intels Linux commitment has been established decades ago. Because nvida loves closed software, I don't see a bright future for nvidia and Linux.

the irony of nvidia being forced to use linux is so funny

There is another alternate... Support ReactOS! It's still a work in progress but if enough talent got behind them and helped them we would have something better than what microsoft is forcing on us.

Tegra SoCs are older than 2014 becasue in 2012 I had a tablet that was powered by a Tegra chip, it was Google Nexus 7, first generation.

Long shot, I know, but I hope NVidia realigns itself with open source software and Linux. And I hope they can use their extensive relationships with software companies like Adobe to bring them over to Linux. Personally, I’ve had it with Windows. Already use Linux exclusively for work, and more and more for gaming via Steam + Proton. Would love to be able to excise Microsoft completely.

Yar, this is all pretty good speculation/fact finding. It will of course eventually be a question of how effective the new product is. Example: Intel's 14 and 10 nm history and now it's bungling of their new GPUs. It's all well and good to have the money and experts/professionals and time to move towards an inevitable situation, but actually reaching a competitive product at the output of that inevitable situation is proven a highly difficult landing to stick.

I'm surprised nVidia would be going after the desktop CPU market in 2022. I was under the impression the desktop computer market had been stagnant for a long time, with people preferring to expand their collections of computers by buying laptops, tablets, and smartphones instead of more desktops.

Microsoft's incompetence and stupidity never ceases to amaze me either. They've trained me long and hard to expect the worst, but they still manage to trump expectations.

This was an incredibly interesting video and hit on some very important things a lot of people aren't talking or thinking about yet. It's obvious nVidia will continue their attempts to break into the CPU market because it became essential the second Intel made it clear they were serious about dGPUs.

If nVidia really wants to make a go of Linux to push their CPUs, they'd best off try to work out open-sourcing the Linux drivers even if it's as simple as working with nouveau to get good performance even on it and turning the proprietary driver into something that plugs into the OSS kernel driver and provides all of the nice nVidia features like CUDA ala what AMD does with AMDGPU being the basis for the OSS driver *and* AMDs closed source driver.

Do that, work with companies like Adobe for Linux support and make/start contributing to an OSS x86-to-ARM translator and I can see the Linux community getting behind nVidia. A lot of us don't really like them because of the driver situation sometimes making things shitty. (eg. Wayland support, kernel updates breaking a driver, etc)

Nvidia also needs a desktop developer workstation with their ARM cpus

Another guess you missed is an x86 instruction decode layer on ARM CPU, just like M1 chip does.

We need IBM to enter the game with their Graphene processor with 100Ghz @ 25watt TPD. Disruptive technology is what we need. And an optimized OS to run on it like Apple created from a Unix core.
