How to Make a Cappuccino | Perfect Coffee

My name is Mike Jones, and I'm a barista at Third Rail Coffee right by Washington Square Park in New York City. I'm going to teach you some basic coffee-making skills.

I'm gonna show you how to make a cappuccino. A cappuccino is traditionally between five and six ounces. You have your shot of espresso, some milk, and then foam on top. Usually it's gonna be in thirds, which is two ounces of espresso, two ounces of milk, two ounces of foam, but somewhere around there is good. Officially, they say between one and two centimeters of foam on top, but there are many different interpretations. So, let's start off by pulling the shot, steaming the milk, and then pouring it. OK, so we have our espresso, we have our milk. Since I've let more air into the milk on this cappuccino we can do a little bit extra texturing, which is just swirling it around. You can give it some side to side shakes to incorporate the foam into the center. Sometimes if you've added just a little bit too much, you can pour about an ounce off the top. All right, now just pour and that is a delicious looking cappuccino.

I'm starting a barista job soon and I know absolutely nothing about coffee so I've been watching these videos nonstop...I could probably recite the intro from memory by now

I'm here because I work at a cafe and have not been trained to make coffee yet, and I need to show up tomorrow morning with no other staff who can use it either.
Wish me luck.

Being Barista Qualified myself, I appreciate his work. Yes I understand that he may look a little short on foam, but that is a modern cappuccino and like he said, many different Baristas have different interpretations.

Seriously you are professional bro and i love this video.

Coffee Types:
Cappuccino
Café Latte
Macchiato
Mochaccino
Cafè Americano
Espresso
Long Black
Flat White
Irish Coffee
Vienna
Affogato.

CAPPUCCINO:
Possibly the most popular type of coffee in the world, a cappuccino consists of three layers (kind of like a cake). The first is a shot of espresso, then a shot of steamed milk, and finally the barista adds a layer of frothed, foamy milk. This final layer can also be topped with chocolate shavings or powder. Traditionally, Italians would consume this type of coffee at breakfast.

Why the hell is watching coffee being made with such precision so satisfying?!

There is so much debate about whether this is a cappuccino or a latte. This is why I love coffee. There are so many different ways that you can make it. If you went from one cafe to the next, they would almost always do something different. It will never be exactly the same.

Guys, I'm Italian so let me explain a couple of things:
1) Name: this is a modern cappuccino, the one you find almost everywhere. Is def.not a latte(correct definition:"Caffelatte" as latte in Italian means just "milk" nothing else)
2) Technic: correct, only misses the foam. Espresso + lil.% of milk + milk foam. If you exceed with milk you are turning your cappuccino into a Caffelatte( "latte")
3) The Barista ALWAYS has to ask you if you want your cappuccino with hot or cold milk (mandatory in Italy if not...change bar 😂). Up to you usually is hot milk.
4) The cappuccino has a lot of foam on top. At least this was what my Grandpa always drinks.
Hope this helps :)

I was a barista back in 90's way when I was in high school before coffee was such a big deal. I worked at a movie theater and we were the first theater to have a cafe. I loved working in the small space. We also made honey backed ham sandwiches.

The only channel I have ever seen make a proper cappuccino, latte, and flat white, with the correct type of milk/foam ratio, is Whole Latte Love

all of you saying that this is just a latte because it doesnt have foam on top need to understand that by making the foam wet and pouring it correctly, he is just actually letting the foam go in the espresso first before rising up, if you leave your foam just on top of your espresso and not letting it mix well, you would have an unbalanced drink, this is how a cappuccino looks like it just looks wet because of how he textured the foam

Hey Mike! Thanks for the great videos! I'm just starting to learn some of these skills and they are very helpful! You make the latte art look so easy even though I understand how much skill and practice is required! Hope you have a great day!

This is actually a true cappuccino to the rest of the world. Very well done might I add. To Americans this is a latte bc that's what Starbucks has told us. But we here in America do things our own way (the Starbucks way) the rest of the world Europe, Australia, etc this is correct! Go to any coffee making competition you will see! I am a 6 year barista. Started first 2 years at Starbucks .

This is why the world of coffee is so different shop to shop. At my work this is known as a latte, a cappuccino in general here and other places in Aus are about an extra 1cm of foam, not always though and a sprinkle of chocolate ontop.
