First thing I noticed when I was overseas - the lack of bird calls. So used to the cockatoos, magpies and lorikeets every day. Coming back home OMG it was awesome to hear them.

Thank you for the love. I enjoy the bird calls here in Oz, the crows sound mournful and tired. A certain tv presenter comedian (Graham Kennedy) used to imitate their call "faaaarrrk faaaarrrk" but for some reason this was frowned upon.

Slang isn't necessarily about contracting words - although, to be fair, Australians do contract a lot of words, it's about words and expressions that express how we feel about things. For example, if you contract a "laptop computer" to "lappy" this isn't just a shortened form of the phrase, it also describes your relationship with the thing it references.

Slang is about making the language fit the needs of the people who use it.
