What If The Federalists Won? | Alternate History

Alexander Hamilton stands among the most well recognized founding fathers, and more over, had perhaps the most clear and thorough vision for the direction he wanted the young country to follow under his Federalist Party. America would, however, turn away from Federalism during the election of 1800, and embrace the Democratic-Republicanism of Thomas Jefferson instead. From 1800 onward, the Federalists were a collapsing party within the United States, but early on many hoped that Hamilton, with his leadership skills, charisma, and name recognition, could turn the tides back in Federalist favor; that opportunity would come to an end when Hamilton lost his life in a duel with Arron Burr. But what if all that changed? What if Hamilton won the duel? What if Hamilton survived? What if Hamilton became President? Well, it's not that simple. For Hamilton to not just become President, but run an actually meaningful administration, we need to go farther back, and remove Jefferson and the Democratic Republican Party as a threat, while placing Hamilton into a position he can effectively launch a successful campaign from. For Hamilton to win in today's alternate history scenario, we'll have to ask the bigger question of what if the Federalists won?

I really like that this scenario has its pros and cons. Earlier industrialization, a stronger nation, and no civil war are great pros. But less individual rights, a more elitist society with a high potential for corruption is a serious con. Imagine John D Rockefeller as a president

I could see Andrew Jackson becoming a Federalist under these circumstances since his response to South Carolina during the Nullification Crisis was to threaten military action and to personally hang the governor. Jackson might still push for voting reforms but in turn argue that people need to contribute to the wellbeing of the nation and so reform it in such a way that national service of some kind is a prerequisite for the ability to vote. Think of it as a watered down version of Starship Troopers

What if Napoleon married a Russian princess and invaded the Ottoman Empire instead of Russia and never invaded Spain all three of these scenarios can go together into one big one because these can work together

Edit thank you all for the likes 😁

The thing about Hamilton saving the federalist is that you missed one key point: His reputation at the time was in shatters after the Reynolds Pamphlet, so...He would've needed to sway public opinion about himself in an age where there was no massive social media to clear his name

As someone who’s been studying Hamilton for awhile, this is super interesting! Love how you’ve presented this!

Seeing how the 1900s, and beyond, played out for this America would be fascinating.

I don’t think he would arrest Jefferson or outlaw the Democratic-Republicans, that seems too extreme even for Hamilton

Fantastic video!
I have a question: have you ever ever published a reading list of any kind? And if not, do you intend to?
I am very curious as to what books you recommend.

I have a friend who is a big history and polisci buff. He used to talk about wanting to write a book about Jefferson and how much he affected the development of the young US. Thank you for another interesting video!
Stay well out there everybody, and God bless you, friends. ✝️ :)

"The vigour of government is essential to the security of liberty a dangerous ambition more often lurks behind the specious mask of zeal for the rights of the people, than under the forbidding appearance of zeal for the firmness and efficiency of government."

I imagine under this scenario, we would routinely witness presidents serving more than two terms, as well. Hamilton had infamously argued in favor of an elective monarch, whereby the president would serve for life, at the Constitutional Convention in 1787. Many of the personal considerations and health factors that limited Washington would not have limited Hamilton, and I suspect he would have had no compunction serving as many terms as he desired. Accordingly, we would never have had a hallowed two term tradition, thereby necessitating a constitutional amendment, at least not for awhile, given the political development of the nation.

One big problem, the VP was the person with the second most amount of votes for president so unless Hamilton ran and did so successfully he couldn’t just become the VP of Adams.

I feel like your overly optimistic about how this timeline would go. Seems far more likely this is one of those scenarios that leads to the USA splitting into multiple smaller nations. Let alone since this is still preindustrial revolution inflating city sizes the likelihood you could stop an alternative to Federalist views from popping up without actions that would destroy the nation is unlikely.

While I sympathize with the Federalists a lot more than I do the Democratic-Republicans, having the radicals of the party run unimpeded would be as bad for America as the radicals of the Democratic-Republicans doing the same.
I do like Hamilton a lot and consider him one of our finest thinkers, but he’s definitely an example why Madison put so many checks and balances into the Constitution.

The best scenario for America would have been one where the moderates of parties emerged victorious. John Marshall would be the clear ideal for the moderate Federalists, and perhaps James Madison would be for the Democratic-Republicans.

here's another idea to consider: What if all the States didn't unite into one Country. What if The North formed one Union and the South a seperate one right from the beginning?

To see what might have happened, one can look at Canada. It consciously adopted Hamilton's political and economic policies at confederation in 1867.

I was reading this alternate history story in which Edward 6th lived longer-I'm not gonna to bore you with the details but in the story, it says, Edward launched A war with Scotland, but the people called it the Tudor-Stuart war. And it only ended when Mary, Queen of scots married Edward.
