How to get empowered, not overpowered, by AI | Max Tegmark

Many artificial intelligence researchers expect AI to outsmart humans at all tasks and jobs within decades, enabling a future where we're restricted only by the laws of physics, not the limits of our intelligence. MIT physicist and AI researcher Max Tegmark separates the real opportunities and threats from the myths, describing the concrete steps we should take today to ensure that AI ends up being the best -- rather than worst -- thing to ever happen to humanity.

The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design -- plus science, business, global issues, the arts and more.

I'm reading his book 3.0, man this guy is a savior. Every human on the planet should get a copy and prepare mentally for what's coming next for humanity.

This guy wrote a book called Life 3.0
If you are interested in AI, I highly recommend it.

Max Tegmark is one of the most brilliant, charming, lovable individuals I've ever had the privilege of hearing. He makes so much sense. We must support him in his efforts to save humanity and use these new discoveries for the good of all. Grateful for your leadership, Dr. Tegmark!

I love this kind of talk, reminds us that the line we draw between science fiction and science is getting more and more blurry!

Thank God, finally a TED Talk that's about AI and doesn't doom us to eternal suffering right away on a depressing tone. It's nice to see other people actually looking forward to it and working to make it right instead of either going "Let's create a god, what could go wrong ?" or "We fucked".

I had opportunity to ask him in person for about a minute. I told him that people are afraid of aliens(since the past), foreigners(since the far past), and AGI(currently) because they don’t trust themself. They always put every bad aspects of their own into ‘others’ and ask for all the responsibility of doomed world. While doing so, those people drive diesel cars, drink with plastic straw, and never donate to the Third-world. I asked him “Do you think everyone could be smart and wise(which is background of Anarchism)? And how do you live as a single person?” He replied “It’s a very profound question and hard to answer. But, um...” I hope he still thinks about it.

Stumbled upon this 5-year-old video and can't help but wonder how ahead this man's thinking was.

Creating AI is so risky. Its like making the first fire. Maybe it'll burn down the woods or it'll lead us into a new era.

That was awesome! I'm one of those folks that sees them as worthy descendants. If they are smarter than us, they are better than us, as intelligence is power these days. "You are as good as you can think" will become the rule if it isn't already. If AGI takes over and beats us, I'll take my loss knowing we might have saved the planet; a planet without us, but we'll die eventually anyways.

I think one of the vital components of ensuring an AGI does not become the tool of domination by a corporate or national entity is by conducting and publishing much of the research and innovation on an open source, decentralized blockchain.

Reminder, "Just because we *can* do a thing doesnt mean we *should* do that thing" hasn't ever *stopped* us from doing it. The US bombed Syria earlier this year because it deployed those chemical weapons that chemists so successfully stigmatized against. The militarization of space is merely a matter of time, global agreements to the contrary be damned.

As a part of steering, AI we must ask for and find ways of dealing with uses for the technology that pose serious risks. Tegmark offers no solutions that have actually worked in the real world.

He opens by memorizing his own book. If you’d already read his book and turned up to hear him speak, all you’d hear is him reading to you the book that you already read. This might have left you feeling disappointed, underwhelmed, betrayed. Used like a cheap Bourbon Street floozy nursing a yeast infection.

Strange coincidence - I just ordered a book called 'Life 3.0 Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence' and by pure chance, stumbled across this Ted Talk, today, which also came out today. Idiosyncrasies on-point at the moment :)

Wonder how the AGI will look back on this short talk about it and feel?

Its interesting these visions for humanity whereas there is the other side of it all, I rarely encounter a person that can cooperate with me to sit down and have an interesting conversation. Its like there is a split in society at a deep level.
