I think if you do some more research you will come to much different conclusions about her singing. You are listening to one of the true great artists in music.

What you're hearing is not "strain", it's her artistic choices of how to express the emotion of the story in the lyrics.
She is NOT a classic pop singer.

If there's "strain" in her voice, she puts it there intentionally. Nothing she puts in her performances is by accident, or unintentional. For such a "young" artist, she has complete mastery of her instrument. With more colors and inflections in her vocal arsenal than others her age could only dream about. Please listen to at least 5 more performances from her and see if your comments remain the same. I believe you'll come to a different conclusion. Intriguing to see a first time rector experiencing Angelina for the first time, look forward to many more.

You need to listen to more of her music before you make comments about here voice failing. This girl can sing any style or genre she wants to.
This cover is glorious, it lets her voice absolutely shine. Thanks to Toby for asking AJ to sing this reinvented cover of his song for his Piano Diaries album. Toby is quoted saying, “Working with Angelina has been nothing short of inspiring. Her ability to channel profound emotion through her voice adds a whole new depth to the song.” They are also working on other songs for AJ. This will be huge for her. You're supposed to give your obviously skilled opinion. At the same time it's a bit hard to make a judgment based on one song❤ She has a very rich vocal toolbox which she uses at will. Try to imagine that everything she did is on purpose.

You might like to listen to her singing 'Unchained Melody' at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony late last year. You'll hear a totally different voice with many crystal clear notes.

I don't think that you have listened to many songs from Angelina. She can turn her rasp on and off like a light switch to suit the song, the lyrics, and the emotion she is trying to convey. She has complete control over it. Check out the song Unchained Melody that she recently performed for the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony.

Jordan has more control over her vocal cords than any other singer on the planet. She changes her tone, fry and rasp depending on the song. She’s been training her voice 4-6 hours a day every day, 52 weeks a year since she was 3 years old. As a contrast to this song, check out Unchained Melody from the Nobel Peace Prize Awards this past December and react to that performance, it was her “normal” voice. Jordan is a jazz singer and performs a song differently every time she sings it, which baffles most people!

Great reaction, and very valid points, Freya. However, what you describe doesn't really fit with Angelina. I have been following her since she was 7, and she has SO many different voices and techniques it's just crazy. She can sing the smoothest you will ever hear, she can sound like she's been drinking whiskey and smoking cigarettes since she was born, and she can sing ANY genre she wants, while still blowing it out of the park. These are things you will only really understand by listening to a wide portion of her performances. That being said though, her raspiness is one of her more identifiable trademarks. But make no mistake about it, it is there because she wants it to be there, and WHEN she wants it to be there. Also what you said about her breathy onsets is one of her trademarks (along with a dozen more I might add). But she does it with ABSOLUTE intention. Again, this is something you will only understand by listening a LOT to her. And of course, all of her fans have 😉 Hence why I guess you will have a rather unison herd commenting on your reaction. I haven't read them though, but I have a very strong feeling that I am right.
On your own time, maybe listen to her performance of My Funny Valentine when she was 16, or maybe her interpretation of Suspicious Minds, made popular by Elvis, also when she was 16.

All important people in the music industry know who she is and what she is good at on big occasions. I don't think anyone has the guts to suggest to her a fast track that doesn't suit her. Love your vocal coach reaction. We understand that you're reacting from a coach point of view. This is Angelina, this is the way she sings, and me personally would not want her to change one thing.
If it's not broken, why fix it.

She has been doing a lot of singing. She just performed in Las Vegas where she did two shows back to back. Before that, she performed at a Nobel Peace Prize event. In reference to the raspiness in her voice, she has had that since she was young. You should check out her videos when she was very young. You will hear the same raspiness in her voice. She has been performing on stage since she was about 7 and did her first studio recording when she was 6. She has been singing since the age of about 1 and a half. So, she has been singing pretty much her whole life.

You should not make comments about her style if you have not heard her many voices. She does exactly what she wants . From jazz, pop, r&b, rock she covers it all. Try to broaden your experience with her. You will change your mind.
