Residents of besieged city of Mariupol, where severe fighting has been going on for days, were evacuated to the nearby village of Nikolskoe controlled by the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic on Wednesday.

There they are allocated to either stay in the village school, which is equipped for evacuees, or go further to Russia, to camps located in the city of Taganrog.

People had to hide in basements for weeks from the constant shelling.

"(We've been) without light, without water, without heat, without anything, two weeks in the basement," said Lidia, an evacuee from Mariupol.

"There are bombs all the time, the shells do not stop at all, you sit in the basement and bounce," said another evacuee, Andrey Sirota.

There have been several attempts to organize evacuation corridors from Ukrainian cities, including Mariupol, which previously failed with Russian and Ukrainian sides blaming each other for the failure.
