Der Sihlsee im Hochtal von Einsiedeln wird von der Sihl durchflossen und durch eine 33 m hohe und 124 m lange Staumauer gestaut. Er ist der flächenmässig grösste Stausee der Schweiz (10,72 km²). Baubeginn war 1936, das Tal wurde im Jahr darauf geflutet. Mit einem Volumen von 96 Mio. m³ speist er das Etzelwerk in Altendorf am oberen Zürichsee (Strom-Produktion für das SBB-Netz in die Werke Ziegelbrücke, Sargans, Gossau SG und Steinen).

Die Kraft der Wassermassen ist gigantisch: Bei einer Zerstörung der Talsperren würde die Flutwelle in knapp zwei Stunden die Stadt Zürich erreichen und bis zu acht Meter unter Wasser setzen.

The Sihlsee is a reservoir in the high valley of Einsiedeln. It is traversed by the river Sihl and dammed by a 33-m-high and 124-m-long dam wall. The Sihlsee is the largest reservoir in Switzerland in terms of surface area (10.72 km²). In 1936, the dam wall was built and the following year the valley was flooded. The Sihlsee has a volume of about 96 million m³ and feeds the Etzelwerk power plant in Altendorf at the upper Lake Zurich (power generation for the SBB railroad network in the Ziegelbrücke, Sargans, Gossau SG and Steinen substations).

In case of a destruction of the Sihlsee dams, a flood wave would reach the city of Zurich in less than two hours, with a water level of up to eight meters.
