Die Silberen (2'314 m ü. M.) erhebt sich über den Höhlensystemen des Höllochs in den Glarner Alpen. Die Bergkuppe am Pragelpass ist bekannt für ihre in der Schweiz einmalige Karstlandschaft. Vom nackten Fels über die geschlossene Vegetationsdecke bis zum subalpinen Wald weist sie sämtliche Zwischenstufen auf. Hier erstreckt sich auch das grösste Karrenfeld der Schweiz.

Das Karrenfeld hat sich hauptsächlich aus Schrattenkalk gebildet, der vor ca. 125 Millionen Jahren hier abgelagert wurde. Die Region ist ein Naturschutzgebiet, das auch den westlich von der Silberen gelegenen Bödmerenwald im Muotatal umfasst: der grösste Fichtenurwald der Alpen.


The Silberen (2,314 m above sea level) is a hilltop close to Pragel Pass lying above the cave systems of the Hölloch cave and belongs to the Glarus Alps. It is a karst landscape which is unique in Switzerland and comprises all stages from bare rock to closed vegetation covers to subalpine forest. A special feature is the limestone pavement, which is the largest in Switzerland.

The limestone pavement mainly is a formation in the limestone gullies, which were deposited about 125 million years ago. The Bödmerenwald forest west of the Silberen in the Muotatal valley also belongs to the protected landscape and is the largest spruce primeval forest in the Alps.
