Apparently the original script just said "they speak jive", and the black actors came up with all the dialogue, and also coached Barbara Billingsley how to "speak jive" . They didnt even get a writing credit, yet its still one of the funniest scenes in any comedy film. Cant help but think if they'd been white, they'd have got a shelf full of oscars.

I caption phone calls onto special Caption phones for hard-of-hearing customers and try to create a WYHIWYG experience in as close to real time as possible for the customer following along on their caption screen with what the speaker on the other end of the line is saying. Sometimes I get calls like this where they forget grandma's caption phone is on. I wish there was a way to let them know there's a middle-aged white male hanging on their every word in order to post it to the caption screen. Unfortunately I'm not as fluent in jive as June Cleaver so I usually have to type onscreen (Speaker is inaudible or unclear.) when calls sound like this. Oh well... Fortunately, if I'm doing my job accurately when they happen to glance down at the phone caption screen and they see something like "is you going to da sto'?", they turn off captioning and I'm done with the call.

Classic scene. I am part black and still find this funny. But I don’t think this could be filmed today. I have mixed feelings about it. I am not offended by it. But it seems everyone is offended by everything today.
