Lymphoedema
Показать описание
Did your arm swell after breast cancer surgery? Did the breast that was operated on feel heavy?
You asked your breast doctor, your oncologist, the nurses... yet no one can tell you what is happening or that it is 'normal' for some swelling to occur.
What is lymphoedema?
“Lymphoedema is abnormal swelling that can develop in the arm, hand, breast, or torso as a side effect of breast cancer surgery and/or radiation therapy. Lymphoedema can appear in some people during the months after surgery or even years after treatment ends.”- (Breast Cancer Organisation, 2019)
Why does lymphoedema occur ?
“Lymphoedema can develop gradually, and you may feel an unusual sensation — such as tingling or numbness — that comes and goes before any visible swelling occurs. Other common symptoms include achiness, feelings of fullness, heaviness, puffiness or swelling, and decreased flexibility or tightness in the hand, arm, chest, breast, or underarm areas.” (Breast Cancer Organisation, 2019)
It is very frustrating when you are trying to manage your lymphoedema as there is so much conflicting advice everywhere. There is still much more research to be done before the condition can be fully understood. Many doctors still are not fully aware about lymphoedema so be ready to do your own research. (Breast Cancer Organisation, 2019)
Please also take note that a qualified lymphedema therapist will provide manual lymphatic drainage (MLD). MLD is not the same as what you see in massage parlour. Please note that ALL LYMPHEDEMA THERAPISTS have to undergo intensive training at a qualified medical institution.
There are surgical options to manage lymphoedema and again, you will need to do your due diligence in finding a capable surgeon who has been practising supermicrosurgery. We have a couple of surgeon recommendations in the US and Singapore!
