Forge Welding and Making a Stainless San Mai knife. Going through the steps of preparing and forging two layers of stainless steel to a layer of 1095 steel for the core of a San Mai (Three Layer) knife billet. After the billet is made I will proceed to make a harpoon style hunting knife and discuss the techniques for preventing splitting problems associated with san mai knives that sometimes occur after quenching the the knife to harden it.

Applying clay is a great tip that none of the other stainless san-mai bladesmiths mention.

Very good information to share. Stayed away from San mai because of most people experiencing the split. Now armed with your advice, thinking I need to order some stainless. Thanks Tony for another great video

Thank you for the great video. Is there a general rule about the size of the billet concerning the knife size you want?

I love san mai, but it's a real pain to make without a press, so I normally don't make it.

Thanks for the video ! 🙂 Did you quench it in oil and at what temperature was it (quenchant) ?

Is the process exactly the same for say a stainless core wrapped in tool steel or even damascus?

Wouldn't the refractory cement make a hamon on blade?

Can we do edge quenching to prevent the steel from splitting? Just by heating the edge and go to the oil..

What type of stainless did you use for your jacket material?
