FURTHER READING

“In order to recover from many kinds of mental distress, there’s really no alternative but to get acquainted with psychotherapy.

Though often dense and complicated, the central ideas of psychotherapy can be summarised as follows:

1. Every human is in part neurotic. A neurosis is any pattern of thinking or behaviour that blocks the full flowering of our personalities and potential. We may be neurotic in love or at work, in our friendships or in our attitudes to creativity or politics. It should be part of every evolved human’s mission to seek to understand and unpick the neurotic elements of their own personalities. The enquiry ‘And how are you neurotic?’ should not be taken as an insult, rather a sensible and kindly request for more information on our particular share of humanity’s warps…”

As a psychologist, I cannot help but commend this video. Every point is very true. Self-acceptance and awareness means a great difference to healing, and generally understanding that life is a process of continuous understanding of your past selves.

How can we be better to ourselves, even by 1%, every day? Sometimes these are things we can work through alone, but often we need help—this is where psychotherapy can be transformative.

I’ve been doing near weekly psychotherapy for 3 years now and it has changed my whole life. I wish everyone had the opportunity to do it.

During my 20s, I completed 7 years of weekly psychodynamic therapy sessions with a psychiatrist (who offered talk therapy). If that weren't enough of a gift itself, due to circumstances unrelated to myself, I received this free of charge! Right place, right time!

The result of this bit of unusually good fortune is something I will have with me for the rest of my life :)

I’ve been in therapy for 30 years. Some thoughts. A certain level of exposure therapy is paramount. Avoidance is extremely counterproductive and will always perpetuate existing problems and create new ones as well. Lean into things you fear. Progress is slow. Being frustrated about slow progress slows it down further.

Harbouring sentiments of wishing you didn’t have the problems you have fuels them. Knowledge is key as is brutal honesty. I guess it’s like everything else in life, you get what you put in. It’s not the same for everyone, and it’s often complicated, but sometimes it’s also crystal clear. In the end, the psyche is fluid. Learning non attachment helps.

About a month ago I was finally able to cry over hurt that was put onto me twenty years ago. And yes it felt like a huge relief. And yes it took some therapy.

I've learned through my journey of healing, with psychotherapy, that childhood trauma is the precursor to teenage, early and late adulthood trauma. The foundation that is laid down in the beginning of your life is what is drawn from as you age. For instance, if you have a narrassist parent, you tend to go into intimate relationships with those who are narrassist. Even though you swore to yourself you'd never put yourself through such heartache again. 💔 Trauma responses, I imagine.
Take care everyone. Have compassion for yourself. ❣️

My issue with Psychotherapy has been that the threshold for having that trauma be "felt" is ambiguous. I saw a Psychotherapist for years who insisted that I'd had only intellectualized my neurosis but was lacking some authentic feeling. A mismatched psychotherapist can place a burden or great sense of lack on the patient. Comprehensive self-discovery can take decades.

I love how in detail you go with these videos. I always learn something new. Even if I understand the topic ❤

The illustrations are always so on point. That last image of the little girl going and hugging the (furry monster) past almost brought me to tears.

Excellent video. Been doing IFS (Internal Family Systems) to help me integrate psychedelic experiences. It was all about childhood trauma. What really started the ball rolling was working on the process of forgiveness: it's been bringing me inner peace, lifting the depression/anxiety.

This video is so informative and interesting. I've been in therapy since around the end of May of last year, (2022) and it's helped quite a bit to talk about things that have been weighing heavy on me for years, to try and make sense of my emotions and the things that have happened to me.

The description, details and visuals used to talk about trauma and what it can entail was well done too and it was honestly kind of impressive how simply put together it all was. It scratches the surface of each topic that is brought up in such a short amount of time, but it's still able to do that pretty well and in a way that is comprehensible I think.

I have been seeing my present therapist for 16 years. How lucky I feel to have her support and how much more of myself am I able to understand and accept. I think EVERY single person needs therapeutic help and how sad that so few can access it.
These School of Life videos are absolutely marvelous. Thankyou so much.

After almost two decades of therapy experience i have come to the understanding that therapy ONLY works if:

1) you are willing to actually work for that change. Talking an hour every week does nothing. Your therapist cant heal you. They can only guide you, but YOU are responsible for progress.

2) you believe that change is actually possible. It wont come on its own. You need to invite it into your life and that wont work if you dont believe. Its like neo in the matrix jumping from one skyscraper to the next. You will fail if you expect to fail.

3) the therapist is qualified and a good match for you. There are massive differences in therapists
Some feel like they're mind ready wizards, a loving mentor and a drill instructor in one. Others just talk about your week with you and are no better than any other person you can talk to. Find a good one. Be picky. Chosing a good therapist is like dating for a serious relationship. Dont settle for the first option just because its easy.

4) accept that there are no shortcuts, no easy fixes and that healing doesn't mean your problems are 100% gone. Healing means getting better, rarely is it a full recovery to how things were before.

This is a great blueprint. It explains it very clearly to people like me who haven’t studied psychotherapy.

I was seeing my shrink for almost a year. After an 8 month break, it’s safe to say I need to go back because from what I’ve seen I still have work to do. Might take a couple more years, but I’m in a way better place than I was 2 years ago

I have been in a weekly therapy for more than 10 years, and every therapist I went to was even more unstable and less self-aware than me. I don't feel better and my life is still very much painful. I spent dozens of thousands of dollars on therapy. I still go and walk on egg shells with therapists because I need some guidance. But the frustration and feeling unheard and misunderstood by the therapists is overwhelming.
