History of Russia Part 3: Age of Glory

The History of Russia continues with the reign of Catherine the Great, a time of cultural splendour, 'enlightened autocracy', and enormous territorial expansion. Catherine's reign saw the annexation of Crimea, and the Partition of Poland, and the settlement of Novorossiya by Russian colonists under the supervision of Count Potemkin. European migrants, such as the Volga Germans, settled in Russia, while Russia's new Jewish population lived within the 'Pale of Settlement'.

Catherine was horrified by the execution of Louis XVI during the French Revolution, and turned her back on liberal ideas. The reign of her son, Paul, saw the great victories of Marshal Suvorov against Revolutionary France, but ended in the Emperor's murder during a palace coup.

The reign of Emperor Alexander I saw modernising reforms by the brilliant Count Mikhail Speranksy, but was dominated by war with Napoleon. In 1812 the French Emperor invaded Russia, but following the Battle of Borodino and the burning of Moscow, he was forced to retreat, and his Grande Armee was destroyed. Alexander's reign also saw the annexation of Finland, expansion into the Caucasus and Balkans, and himself take the title 'King of Poland'.

I always enjoy reading the comments, feedback and the general internet insanity here on YouTube. But did you know Epic History TV now also has a dedicated community on Common Lounge?
It's a great place to suggest topics for future video, give me feedback and have interesting debates with fellow history fans. Here's the link, spread the word:

History of Russia has always been epic, mysterious, tragic, majestic, with its ups and downs. Thank to you for this channel!

I am Japanese. I have't known the Russian history almost at all. Your videos really encourage us to be interested in history itself. If possible, I want to know the Asian history from your European point of view.

Amazing video!! I suggested to my 8th grade teacher we use your videos for history class, and when she saw them she accepted. We watch them sometimes on Fridays as a little extra history lesson. Keep up the good work :)

Minor correction because it's been misinterpreted a lot of the time. Napoleon's retreat started in mid September and was over by mid December. So it was the fall/autumn rather than winter as most people tend to think. But I am not disregarding the weather element here. I can't even imagine the conditions if they started moving out in November/December.

I'm not sure why people are clamoring for a WW2 series. There are so many of those already. I like that this Russia series is on a topic that is equally familiar and obscure. I would like to see similar series on countries like the Japan, China, Scandinavia, the Byzantine Empire or the Ottoman Empire.

If you want to please the military history crowd and cover a war, do the 30 Years War. It's enormously influential in European history and unfortunately largely unknown to the average person.

I would specify that muslim caucasian tribes were resisting - Chechens, Circassians and Dagestani. Georgians and Armenian were fine with Russian rule since it granted these Christian nations defense from Muslim Turks.

For us to follow and understand - using the map as the main scene is great, with the present year and rulers visable. Appealing music and the coherent pictures adds quality to your great narrating and voice. Thanks for your great work.

After you finish Russian history, are you planning to do Germany's history or France, Turkey, Spain, Italy?

You forgot that Moscow was given to the French willingly. The army was lead into the city, which was then torched, crippling their regiment.

Great video. Do you plan to cover the USSR and modern Russia, or will this series only cover the Russian Empire?
