Expectation: Russia was poor, Germany beat Russia in WWI
Reality: Russia has the 1917 revolution, had to pull out of WWI, and went into civil war

You're incorrect.
Although Russian empire had problems with industrialisation and liberal institutes, it was reforming itself during Alexander II and after 1905 revolution.
Also Russian army wasn't pathetic, as it's usually called. Because a weak army will not be able to fight for 3 years on two fronts against three countries, one of which is the most powerful of its time. It is true that the leadership of the army of the Russian Empire made mistakes, but it was still able to win a lot of battles in these difficult conditions.

Russia was actually modernizing if slowly. It had more engineers than Germany and William Howard Taft praised its labor laws as the best in the world. Lenin admitted that if Pyotr Stolypin's reforms had been successful, the Bolshevik Revolutiom would have been impossible. Sadly Stolypin was assassinsted by a leftist revolutionary before his reforms could materialize. Russia also joined WW1 and the difficulties it faced helped pave the way for the Bolshevik Revolution. But the idea that Tsar Nicholas II was a bad ruler is a fabricated myth based on liberal & Bolshevik propaganda.

Even the soviet collapsed. It was not country itself rather weak leadership. Russia needs a strong, ruthless leader who embodies the Russian Brown Bear.

As long as leaders like Ivan the Terrible, Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, Salin were ruling and oppressing the masses things were good. It is only when gentle, naive rulers like Czar Alexander 2, Gorbachev came to power things went downhill.

Problem is not with not caring for people. Russia grows and falls with qualities of their leader. Russians reveres strength, ruthlessness. Dissent is a sign of weakness.

I’ve never been a fan of over simplified and semi sarcastic historical reports like this. It skips over so many details and makes so many generalizations that you don’t really learn much, and the bit you do learn is saturated with bias and falsities

In fact Russian Empire could not fight well because of one law made by revolutionаries. That law allowed warriors to leave the battle when they wanted

Actually the Russian soldiers and Czar Nicholas II underestimated the might of the German Empire. They didn't knew that the Germans actually possessed modern weapons. The German artillery was so modern that it could destry Russia's manpower like camphor. And each Russian soldier believed that they would defeat the Germans within Christmas and would return home to celebrate it. So the Czar sent it's troops without much arms, ammunition and training into the battlefield.
Within 2 years the Russian line cracked and the Russian soldiers were chased back in their own land and 1/3rd of its territory was occupied by the Germans.
The fertile food producing areas such as Crimea, Ukraine was occupied by the German army and as there was lack of troops, farmers went to fight and so there was nobody to produce food. There was tremendous shortage of food, fuel and coal and high price of articles so the Russian people cursed the czarist government. And finally Lenin came to their rescue.

I'd say the only 3 mistakes Nicholas II had ever done was trusting Kuropatkin for defeating the Japanese, being harsh on 1905 Revolutionaries and appointing Rasputin. Aside from that, he knew he wasn't comptent himself and instead, he appointed thoose who were.

Russian industry and railway system wasn't as advanced as Germany nor Britain but it was still a considerable factor in it's mobilization and supplement. In terms of military production, however, they were unprepared for a world scale war and when it started, there was 1 rifle for every 3 Russian soldier, some didn't even had boots or coats. They even suffered some casualities due to the cold in the Caucaus campaign (still not as many as the Turks did).

In terms of the officer and leading cadre, Imperial generals were generally consisting of conservative old men who couldn't adapt to the new ways of warfare. Aleksey Kuropatkin is a very good example of poor leadership, in more tham 20 years of service, he did not gain any significant victories againist Japanese and German armies in 1905, 1915 and 1918. Thoose who adapted the new techologies renowned themselves as precious warriors (such as Brusilov, Yudenich and Kappel) but couldn't turn the tide of the war. So in conclusion, there were both capable and incompetent commanders in the army, but the capable ones weren't sufficient for winning the war.

Russians still had a good army, they won against Turkey and Austria, which asked for Germans help, then came Russian revolution in 1917
