Singapore is expecting the number of people with dementia to increase 10 times by 2050. However, there is currently no treatment or way to alter the progression for dementia. So how do we better understand the causes of dementia or Alzheimer's disease?

When someone suffers from Alzheimer's or stroke, their brains are deprived of oxygen due to damaged blood vessels. Research by local scientist Christine Cheung, aims to prevent or reverse this damage to blood vessels.

There is currently no way of extracting healthy brain cells from life donors. Christine's research would allow us to mimic or create healthy brain cells from stem cells. This would help us better understand how they react to different conditions, and ultimately, the causes for dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
