Urban Coyotes

If we were to put our shoes in the place of the coyote paws, we’d be pushing back too. As our habitat increases to the detriment of wildlife habitat these species may give some pushback as the coyote or leave the area or die out. It shouldn’t be a surprise that the urban sprawl around most cities will result in increasing encounters with wildlife. After we’ve taken most of the land for ourselves, only then will we wonder where the natural habitat disappeared to. GROWTH, GROWTH, GROWTH. That’s all we hear from city administrators. This can only result in SHRINK, SHRINK, SHRINK for natural habitat. Iowa is near the bottom amongst the nation in acreage of the original habitat still intact. Corn and soybeans have pushed out native prairies and woodlands. The native Americans would say “what else is new” to this situation.

I wish y'all would have made some mention of the returning Mexican Red Wolves in parts of Texas looking very similar though larger than coyotes and how beneficial it is to post where they are being seen too.

i had my 1st contact w/ a coyote last night which was not pleasant. my dog (50Lbs) and i were being followed by 2 of them. when i turned and confronted them (yelled and chased) 3x they retreated BUT only to resume their stalking when we continued our (3am) walk. i finally had to pursue them until they ran away. i will be armed for our late night walks in the future.

Several incidents in my area with coyotes killing and eating pets. I don’t agree with the “can’t we all just get along” philosophy. They are totally wild animals and often try to get dogs to chase them into brushy areas where 2-3 more coyotes are waiting to join in on the kill.

We have urban foxes, who have existed peacefully for decades with our outside feral cats. I put a trail camera out to observe the foxes and it caught the first coyote we've seen in 20 years at this very urban location (a block from IH35) as it grabbed one of our 14 year old feral cats as it slept, and killed it on camera--that cat didn't stand a chance, with a dog a cat will stand a chance, not so with the coyote. So when it's said "unless the opportunity presents itself" cat and dog owners should take that to mean unless it comes across your pet without you around. The coyote killed two cats total before we could get them trapped. Now the surviving two live inside (one happily, one not so much yet!). No more outdoor kitties for us! When it killed the second cat I happened to see the coyote, I opened the back door and when I did it went to the front yard, headed to our porch where another cat was sleeping unaware. As soon as I shined the flashlight in its eyes the coyote turned and sailed over our 5 foot fence with ease. So they ARE easy to haze. I was hoping it would come back around after we had the remaining two cats inside as I was ready with strobing flashlights and pennies in a coffee can to make sure it got the message, but haven't seen it in person or on camera since. As we take over more of the land for buildings, this is going to happen more so I think all we can do in town is to haze to keep your space inhospitable, and to keep pets (or even former feral cats) inside when we aren't with them.

TPD I got nothing but love and respect for you but there have been multiple incidents in the DFW area of Coyotes attacking pets and people. I empathize with them but I’m not sure about that statement about passive animals will wash.
