I love coyotes!!! I lived in off the grid in Texas' Big Bend for nearly 15 years. The coyotes are tricksters. I iknow they have a sense of humor. My two dogs and I were sitting around a small campfire one evening. A small pack of them got within feet of us before letting out a howl. They ran away yipping. It sounded like they were laughing at us.

Coyotes do have a natural predator: cougars. When a cougar moves into an area, the first thing it does is take out the local coyote pack, and even domestic dogs. We can tell when there’s a cougar in our area cause the coyote packs will go silent for however long the cougar is around.

One thing forgotten in the narrative is that coyotes will build elaborate and overly-complex devices in order to catch roadrunners.

Just drove by a coyote at 12pm. He was calm when i drove next to him and then walked into the woods.
And last week 2 black bears ran out in front of us on motorcyles. I keep seeing a lot of wild life ever since i started riding a motorcycle

A few years ago I adopted a mutt from a dog rescue, had it DNA tested and it came back 18% coyote. He's definitely got the prey drive, little dude has caught and killed 4 birds by bolting out the back door and grabbing them before they could take off (sucker is FAST!) and also one small rabbit that unfortunately found it's way into our backyard.
He's one of the best dogs I've ever owned and I've had quite a few in my lifetime.

The most interesting thing about them, #1, is their ability to survive in such a wide range of climates in the wild. As far as mammals are concerned, they are way up there, from harsh and super hot desert SW of the US to pretty high latitudes of Canada.

Missed Fact 1: other than a 3 year old in 1981, there has only been one recorded death by coyote in Canadian history: a 19 year old old Folk singer on vacation in Cape Breton Island in 2009.
Missed fact 2: Apparently coyotes don't prefer folk music.

>> Because of coyotes, wolves have been pushed back into the far northern regions of North America.<< This statement (conclusion) lacks evidence. Common theory is that wolves were more heavily hunted in the gun common U.S. where they threatened ranchers and farmers. They have retreated to more isolated parts (north). Coyotes, being smaller, have historically been seen as much less of a threat to rural residents and are less likely to be killed on sight. They are also more adapted at adjusting to urban environments. Because of this they have not suffered the "habitat loss" that wolves have, they have experienced a "habitat gain" because of humans. hth

I'm in southern CA and our city of full of coyotes. They're in an around the local public golf courses and they hunt rabbits and squirrels. They are a threat to small pets and children and you have to make sure to bring your cats in at night.

Coyote's buy a lot of products from Acme. When they use those products things don't go well for them. Yet they still buy products from them again and again.
This proves Coyote's aren't good at learning from their mistakes.

Where I live in the suburb of a large California city, a young female coyote used to visit quite often. She was quite tame and friendly. Too much so, in fact. For about three months I would see her almost daily.
She definitely had a sense of humor and a playful nature. Once she found a tennis ball and would toss it, chase it and catch it for a up to half an hour. I also would spot all four of her feet sticking up out of tall grass, when she would take a nap. Often when I returned and parked my car, she would be right there in the headlights.
Eventually she stopped coming around. I like to think and hope she found her way into the nearby hills, found a mate and started a family. It was fun to have her around for a while and sweet when she would curl up and fall asleep right next to me. But she needed to learn to avoid humans and go be a truly wild coyote.
