More Equipment Changes

After 10 days on the AT, and one significant rain storm, I have some equipment changes I am implementing before going back out on the AT.

Follow along as I hike the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Main, passing through 14 States and covering 2,197.4 miles. I am 63 years old, had double knee replacement eight years ago and a Type II Diabetic on a Low Carb (KETO) Diet to control my Diabetes.
Should be a great time.

Awesome to hear you are getting back on trail! Putting water on you straps also helps offsets some of the weight your carrying. Great choice for a bunch of reasons!

I did a similar switch with the insoles for my merrell Moab (shoes - not boots). After evaluating that switch I determined the cushioning comfort level was better, BUT the overall fit was not. Specifically the heel area was raised and led to some rubbing on the heels, and I did a re-lacing to open up the toe boxes. The next weekend trip I am going to put the original insoles back in and "re-compare". Disclaimer - I am not on the AT - I am doing weekend hikes and day hikes (in and around Shenandoah National Park).

I love my tensor. That's a good switch with the bag and the flextail. I've never tried a flextail but it sounds like a great idea. Sounds like you've trimmed it down well. Good tips. Looking forward to your getting back on trail.

I love my Merrell boots... from day 1, they were comfortable. I have yet to get a blister and I've only worn my darn tough socks with them... yeah, they weigh more than runners but I feel that just strengthens my legs more. Im hoping to do the AT in '26 and my plan is to start with the boots (when it's colder) and switch to runners when the weather warms up. 💚🥾🗻🌲
