Scoliosis as a diagnosis is too general because there are different types of scoliosis associated with different causes.

The most common being idiopathic scoliosis, neuromuscular scoliosis, degenerative scoliosis, congenital scoliosis and traumatic scoliosis.
Idiopathic scoliosis is considered multifactorial, meaning there can be many reasons why a patient can develop scoliosis. About 80 percent of scoliosis cases are classified as idiopathic scoliosis, and the rest fall under one of the other four types with known causes.

Neuromuscular is the second largest category; it is caused by the presence of a larger underlying neuromuscular condition. These can affect the soft tissue and connective tissues of the body or the nervous system, like the spinal cord. It is caused by age-related spinal degeneration associated with unresolved adolescent idiopathic scoliosis that left unresolved trauma to the area.

Congenital scoliosis is when scoliosis develops in utero. It happens as a result of a hemi vertebra, a malformed bone within the spine itself, and it is possible for patients to have multiple hemivertebra.

Traumatic scoliosis is when scoliosis is caused by trauma or injury, although it is different from degenerative scoliosis because the trauma causes scoliosis to occur immediately instead of over time.

What all scoliosis types have in common is that it becomes structural and starts leading to a structural deviation of the spine. Even if you knew what caused scoliosis and corrected it, the curve itself is not changing, and scoliosis will need to be treated as a separate entity.

Proactive treatment is driven by the causation associated with scoliosis. The goal is to stay ahead of the progressive nature of scoliosis to have a better chance at a positive outcome. There are two rules of thumb when it comes to treating scoliosis: the smaller the curve and the younger the patient, the better the results and the younger the patient.

Even though different causes would have different treatments, the main course of action is to reduce the size of the curve so that scoliosis can have a reduced impact on the health and longevity of the body.

At the Scoliosis Reduction Center, we recommend being proactive and dealing with the curve itself, as by the time a patient is diagnosed with scoliosis, the cause of most of their ailments is the size of the curve itself.

Can a series of spinal traction treatments increase curve of scoliosis? I am 80 and this last year began having pain with adult onset scoliosis. In the last 30 days I have been having a series of Chiripractic traction treatments for my degenerative disk disease.
