Finally got my server working following your guide. Proxmox is running on an SATA SSD with a TrueNAS scale VM running a 6x12TB raidz2 array. Now I need to figure out how to set up all my dockers on Proxmox. Do you recommend running them all on a single Ubuntu server within proxmox? I also have to figure out how to migrate all my dockers from my mac as well as my existing media library over to the TrueNAS array. My media is currently on a thunderbolt 3 DAS SSD array. I could probably just direct attach that to my server but then how do I move the files across from within TrueNAS?

Thanks a ton for the great content. I have found your videos quite helpful as I find my way around this “new world” of self-hosting / home lab setup.

In a Proxmox + TrueNAS or OMV setup, what is best approach for ZFS Storage Pool. Is it best to setup the zpool in Proxmox for use by the NAS software or is it better to setup the zpool from within the NAS software?

First I must say exactly video and thank you for all your hard work, but I have a question I have truenas scale installed in proxmox and I would like to share my pool or smb share with all my media files to my Plex container in proxmox is this possible, If so could you point me in the right direction please..?

I have several question:

how come trunas scale reported memory as ECC, as i believe intel 10900K doesn't support ECC. or trunas will always displayed ECC regardless of the memory type 😅?

also any reason why use truenas scale instead of core if it is just use to create the shared storage ?

the speed test of the windows 11 VM is mind blowing, may i know what disk configuration you used ? does the disk speed is limited by the speed disk configured in the truenas?

thank you very much

But I think you passed over the actual creation of the VM. I had to enter the console in proxmox and go through several screens of setup to get the truenas vm up and running - it’s not an auto installation - also what if you already have on board mini sas hd to SATA cables to your hdds? i don’t have or need an hba - can those be passed through?

Hi, great series! Maybe you can test copy speeds into ZFS pools from an other system on your system and compare it to your bare metal Truenas system results. I had a definite speed overhead when I was using Unraid to run a Truenas Scale VM.
Second thing, perhaps you can mention Proxmox Backup System. That is the way to do incremental backups of your Proxmox VMs and LXCs.
You can virtualize that on your Proxmox. Even if this sounds a bit strange.

Nice series, inspired me to review my next setup again. Coming from Truenas Core I was planning on going for Truenas Scale bare metal but your setup is a lot more flexible.

Why use Proxmox? you can do the same on Truenas scale.

Thank you for the awesome content. My opinion on this route: Truenas Scale is very bloated if essentially all you want to use it for is a GUI front end for creating zpools and datasets. Especially considering you are virtualizing it on proxmox, which supports ZFS natively. It just seems unnecessary. You can use turnkey fileserver if you want to create file shares via samba or nfs and create your zpools and datasets directly on proxmox and avoid all of the overhead of a TrueNAS Scale VM. At the very least, I would use TrueNAS Core if I was going to virtualize it and not use any of the docker/kubernetes features in Scale. Core performs better and uses fewer resources and still has all of the ZFS functionality you require.

This has been super helpful, but ive enountered something weird when trying to pass through disks to the TrueNas VM. For some reason, only half the discs are showing up. weirder still is that by starting the truenas VM, the discs im not seeing there are being removed from proxmox, but if i restart the server they return. Any thoughts?

Great video, however, I don't see where/how you use the NVME that was shown on a previous video as part of your server hardware. Are you installing TrueNAS on it and not on the SSD that hosts proxmox?

would this proxmox setup work if I installed Unraid instead of TrueNAS (for the entire Proxmox series). Great stuff thanks for sharing

nice video, that quick and easy TrueNAS setup is also useful even for users of baremetal setup :)

Are all your storage disks in proxmox carried over from your Truenas VM? Did you have any issues with saving a Truenas VM snapshot to one of the storage devices ported over from Truenas?

Yes I am interested, how to use a single nvme drive for boot, cache, and s-log device for Trunas
