The key with Subarus is changing the oil far more frequently than recommended. If yo do that, the filter is less likely to have time to deteriorate to the point of failure. I believe Subaru currently recommends 7000 mile change intervals, but that is way too long for these boxer engines which are known for being hard on oil. I recommend no more than 5000 miles between changes for all Subaru engines. I'm on my 2rd Subaru and my 3rd on currently on order (2023 Outback Onyx XT) and I always change the oil every 4000-5000 miles, depending on whether it's warm or cold and the type of driving I'm doing.

D LG is right. 5000 miles or less. The oil drain plug super easy to get to. Oil filter on late model FBs on top, and easy to get to. Local auto parts stores will take the old oil. The 5 quart jugs are the easiest to handle old oil. Buy crush rings for the oil drain plug at the auto store at least, even if purchasing new oil elsewhere, because they are doing you a solid by taking your old oil.
