Cost of Living in North Cyprus (Real Estate)

Our friend, Roger Bara talks about the cost of Real Estate in North Cyprus. He shows examples of Villas (his back yard), apartments (behind our Supermarket), and bungalows (our friend’s house). Each of these homes has something different to offer.

When an American thinks of the word “villa” an image of a huge beautiful home on a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean comes to mind. In reality, the word really means two story, single family home. So, obviously, a semi-villa is a duplex and so-fourth.

An apartment is a condo, which is to say it’s an apartment you can purchase. As an aside; a flat is an apartment here. You rent a flat and buy an apartment. The word condominium doesn’t exist in North Cyprus. Confused yet?

This brings us to a bungalow. The word bungalow simply means detached, one story, single family home. In American english, we think of a bungalow as this small, very private little home on an island. That may well be true here but most bungalows are in fact nice, single family homes.

I admit I prefer the American version of the little place on a romantic, South Pacific island to the reality of my friend’s house with Internet & a flat screen. Of course, if I had to live in one I would choose the reality over the American dream.
