Thanks for such a useful lesson. 'It's raining cats and dogs' is an old British expression, and I'd be impressed to hear an English learner use it. We have lots of expressions for rain, such as 'It's lashing down'/ 'lashing it down'/ ruder versions!

People say raining cats and dogs in the US. That guy was wrong.

I don't know where that guy was from, but I'm from the U.S. and I grew up saying it's raining cats and dogs. Of course that's been a few years ago but still. We also say (when it's raining very hard) it's a gully washer or it's a toad strangler.

Some of these are really funny. I used to make these mistakes when I was at beginner level and learned over time their correct usage.

There’s a few of those *_bad_* examples or phrases which are taught in duolingo. Wonder how many other things I’ve learned on that app, only to be wrong in conversational life?

Raining cats and dogs is standard in the uk for its pissing down, both are acceptable and fully understood. 👍🇬🇧🇪🇸 🇨🇴

I was working on a retaining wall one time in Bogota and asked one of the head manos if I should weld something a certain way and he was all like, "Hagalo man~ana". It was like 1 PM. I wanted to tell him to stop joking around so I said, "No me jodas" and everyone broke out in laughter. I think I told him to not fuck with me lol

By the way, "raining cats and dogs" might be somewhat dated, but it's still a very common expression in many parts of the US. It seems like you were being held to very high English speaking standards!
