I read this in one day. My mom died of cancer last Nov and she was not the best mom, and at times abusive. It was so helpful to read about someone else who has a complicated relationship with their mom. Most of the dead mom books are about loving and beautiful moms. I had yet to see something that talks about the utter heartbreak but also the relief that comes from losing a complexly flawed parent.

I liked the narration because it wasn't a performance, it felt like she was just telling her story. There's a part when she pauses slightly and her voice is cracking, I'm glad they kept it in as it showed how important it was for Jennette to tell her story

Didn't know anything about her since I never watched iCarly, but I saw an interview she did recently and was captivated by her personality and her story. Thanks for this review! I'm on the waiting list at the library (149 people ahead of me!) But I have a friend who might buy it and said she'd lend it to me.

To me the craziest part is how much she remembered in extreme detail.

I don't know... Even if the title were half serious I'd still think it's a valid title. Sometimes, our parents aren't good people or good parents. We have to stop putting Parenthood on a pedestal. Mom's aren't automatically "good" because they had children.

I think we're actually geared to be more damning when fathers are absent or abusive than when mothers are. Because often abuse by a mother while it can be physical, is more often psychological in nature. It embeds in us all sorts of disordered thinking and negative self image and self talk. Oftentimes mother's who are like this will try to mold their children into having the same insecurities they do, by projecting them onto their children.

It's probably true and valid that there was relief and comfortability that came only after her mom died. Hence the title is absolutely fair.

Olive, you are the GOAT when it comes to delivering book reviews (among other things)! This is the most fair, thorough, and respectful review I’ve seen of this book!

My goodness. I feel so bad for Jennette. But I'm glad she's been able to heal from the hard life she's had.

This sounds like a fascinating read and a really nuanced discussion about a fraught relationship. Looking forward to trying it one day.

Oh gosh. It sounds like my relationship with my mother. I want to know her story, but I’m worried it’ll be triggering 😰

I'd never heard of her until this book came out and I'm so intrigued now! Everyone says it's a great memoir!

I appreciate the care that you took to discuss Jennette McCurdy and her book as a whole rather than highlighting the gossip. Not something I think you’d do anyway! I can’t wait to read this. My much younger brother used to watch iCarly so I’m very intrigued to see what this experience was to her.

You are a gifted reviewer. Thank you for your thoughts, just placed a hold with my library. It must be a hot ticket since there is an estimated 21 week wait.

Olive will you share what lipstick and blush you have on? I love adding a new shade of lipstick to my repertoire almost as much as adding to my TBR list. Perfect match to the book cover!

You hit the nail on the head on so many points, and I think you and I had a very similar reaction to this book. Thank you for sharing.

My nephew used to LOVE iCarly when he was a young boy so I've watched quite a bit of it. Sam was my favorite on the show. I've been curious about this book since I heard about it so thank you for such a wonderful review. I don't usually read memoirs but this is one I think I'll be adding to my tbr.

Oh I am so glad you did this review! I've been waiting for this book to come out and am listening to it on Scribd. I too had a complicated/problematic relationship with my mother and even if it's not something you want to have in common with another human it's validating to know you're not alone. I saw a clip of her being interviewed by George Stephanopoulos on GMA. She shut him down when he tried to ask about Nickelodeon. It was great!.
