San Diego County’s tax-defaulted properties hit the auction block

Bidding opened Friday for San Diego County’s online auction of properties in default on taxes, and more than 1600 people registered to participate.

“It has been going marvelously well. Our team has worked so hard, so good about bringing the market to the people, and it’s working,” said Dan McCallister, Treasurer-Tax Collector for San Diego County. “We’ve had a very good reaction. There are lots of bargain hunters out there and not just in San Diego.”

In February, CBS 8 previewed the auction of more than 400 listed properties, including homes, vacant lots, and timeshares, all of which were in default on taxes owed for more than five years.

“Things happen and they can’t be controlled. We’re human, we make mistakes, things happen,” said McCallister.

Property owners had until March 9 to pay their back taxes to redeem their properties before the auction, and many people came through at the last minute.

When are you going to tell the truth that property taxes are voluntary, that under federal law all land is patented and issued under fee simple absolute ie allodial title. California lost this scotus case under the Summa court case way back in 1984. Then follow up with Private Law 114-31, from 2016 where congress had to step in a give the Rideout and Stark families over billion dollar settlement, gave them 1500 acres of land, and issued them a new land patent with no taxes forever.

Good God. Lot value only is 600 thousand PLUS?? And note: the Chinese suitcase money left almost a decade ago. Who are you going to BLAME now??? We just sold our El Monte SGV property (1963) but that's a double lot, RV garage, well built but older house with most of the appliances upgraded, roof done, permits in place: not much more than these bids for crap holes at lot value.

Proceeds go to a general fund. That’s bad news. Why California is screwed up. No money is actually allocated to dedicated fund groups. All general funds. Highest gas taxes I the nation and we have the worst streets for it. Why? General fund, all those taxes go to other things than our streets.
That money will most likely be spent on something worthless benefiting everyone but the citizens that pay taxes.

Tax collector guy says, "things happen, and they cant be controlled, um, we're humans, we make mistakes". So then the county comes in and takes your property then sells it. then the money goes to the counties general fund.
