DCS Mixed Reality Update 3

Some interesting developments that bring Mixed Reality just one step away from being a usable solution in DCS.

Since I don't have a simulated cockpit with real MFDs and HOTAS ( currently using Quest 3, Saitek X52 and 2 sets of programmable Cougar MFDs), I need to be able to see what's around me. I also fly the F-16 and F/A-18 pretty equally. My augmented reality solution (for now) is using Reality Mixer. It's not the most elegant solution, but it works. It's a PITA to set up the passthrough every time I want to fly because the passthrough won't be in the same exact spot so I went in another direction. Instead of setting up each MFD in a location to match each MFD, I have a small passthrough area at the bottom of my headset. Just tilting my head back a little allows me to see everything around me with a glance. Kinda like looking through reading glasses. I can't even read the backlit keyboard if needed.

Nice work ! I strongly believe that having a sizeable area of passthrough around tracked hands is the best way to have MR now in flight sims

Have you tried Helios as an option? Im trying to see if using helios and passthrough can work for MFDs

If you were doing this with a apache cockpit, do you know if you would see the ihadss when looking at area set for the passthrough? Is there a depth setting?

At least the F-18 that you fly has dark background for the displays to be readable, although its instruments have transparent background in VR. For the F-15E that I fly, it's the opposite. Instruments are fine but the MFDs are transparent in VR so not readable. So my mixed reality with openkneeboard setup for the strike eagle is passthrough only for bottom half of the view, to see left and right console. Front console remains in VR, until I lean in and the VR dissolves into passthrough for me to see the physical switches. Like you, aligning VR and passthrough is a pain each time. But once aligned, the MR experience is very useful and fun.

What would be the best way to get the cockpit masked in your opinion? ideally in openxr. Reality mixer would be great if it somehow worked in openXR, or ideally an option to chromakey out the whole cockpit in DCS...

Fantastic thanks so much for trying this out! I've just started doing this myself with the WINWING TOPGUNMIP and a Quest 3! but came up against the same challenges of alignment and remembering it between sessions, keen to hear and watch what you come up with

Nice! So this methods works having physical MFDs like the winwing set up? I’m going to set up a second monitor and use the Helios thing and see if that works using your method! I tried using the iPad for my mfd but the display disappears when in vr
