depends on what you want to make; UDK is good for starting design; even tough Blender is even better for prototyping.
UDK is not less complex than unity either; it's just more high level so you don't have a lot of control out of the box with it, but you could learn unreal script and program what you need.
Unreal Engine has been used for MMOs llike Tera and Lineage 2; action games like Arkham Asylum and other genres that aren't FPS; so don't think it's limited.

When you subtract from the interior, wouldn't it be easier to just make the brush hollow?

Is there a way to get the 3 grid views onto one viewing screen and hit a button to switch between the 3? Like CoD4 Mod Tools if you've ever used that.

Selecting new map only allows me to select Blank map, and different lightnings.

Question: When I hit W, the static meshes do not vanish, but the vantage point moves forward as in WASD. What am I doing wrong?

I personally like UDK, Cryengine and Source.Not in any order.

So additive could be used to create raw models and subtractive could be used for details. Like say you were to use additive to make a rock, yeah and then you use subtractive to make carvings and make a statue. Could that work?

Same thing, W just moves me forwards. Can't find any disable static meshes hotkeys or buttons.
