Over the years Chad and I have developed some informal rules, or habits, which we follow to declutter our home and ultimately live a more minimalist lifestyle. While we're not advocating any extreme lifestyle changes, we do feel that if you can keep clutter to a minimum, your life, and your cleaning routine, is significantly simplified and more enjoyable day in and day out.

What are your thoughts on minimalist living?

My daughter has two sons and I was forever bringing them gifts every time that I saw them. A few years ago I was gently reminded that they have a very small living space and there was simply no more room for "things".... We came up with a plan and now we only share "experiences" .... We go ride our bikes, go to parks, aquariums, pick up pine cones cover them in nut butter, bird seed & hang them for the birds.. Go feed the ducks at a nearby pond, go swimming, Fishing, I could go on and on, it has been the best decision ever!! Children don't need more toys...just your time!!

My grandmother was everything to me. It's funny, a few months before she died, she bought be a really ugly set of pajamas as a gift. I never wore them. They stayed in the flimsy cardboard box from the store she bought them from. At her funeral, my grandpa gave some of her stuff away to family, and I ended up keeping one of her scarfs in that box, too. It became "the grandma box". It sat in my closet for 5 years, moving with me from apartment to apartment, and I eventually realized that it was not only taking up space, but a constant reminder of my grandma being gone. I got rid of the box and its contents a few weeks ago, and it actually feels like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders. I love my grandma. A box of things is not my grandma, and I don't need mementos to remember and love her.

Great video! While I LOVE the idea of a minimalist lifestyle, I'm still a ClutterBug ;) Having 3 kids also means having a lot of extra stuff always coming in the home. While I still have more things than I should, we make "purging" part of our regular cleaning routine too.

I will never be a minimalist, but I'm on a journey of purging and decluttering. It feel good to have less.

Now that I have an empty nest I've been decluttering my home & working toward a minimalist life style. One trick I've used to get rid of the sentimental items, such as my daughter's art work, has been to take a picture of the item & journal what that piece means to me. One of my goals for doing all of this is to live in a tiny home & travel more. Still a work in progress but getting there.

I have a house cleaning buddy-- we text a "before" pick... the buddy will text some encouragement (like "attack that pile of laundry like an angry ninja!") then I send an "after" pic. This is so powerful. Helps us stay on track and we can see what a difference that focused time made.

I'm not a 100% minimalistic HOWEVER, I agree with your mom that only 3 items go on a surface. And I don't believe in having 20 towels when there's only 4 people in my family. Or 30 sets of sheets when we only have 3 beds. Haha I love your videos. You always help! Xo always makes sense

I've been wanting to purge my house for about two years now, but always felt over whelmed to start, well it's finally happening this week and goodness what a load off my mind! My thing is I want to feel FREE and minimalism in the home with food and everything else is giving me that. Great topic...tfs! Maggie

"Minimalism" isn't for me, but moving away from consumerism most definitely is. I don't need 3 things in a drawer to be happy with my space, but I would like to have fewer, higher quality items, and to have my space be more curated. I want to be surrounded by things I love. It's hard with kids, but as they get older, it gets easier.

Less ornaments and knick knacks= less dusting, anything to avoid cleaning x

The phrase "this is perfectly good" is what stalls me every time.

I would definitely call myself a minimalist. Been this way a few years, it's just who I am now. Everything has it's place, It came about because I hate having to look for stuff, I want to be able to go right to it. I also cant stand a mess, so I clean often (and enjoy housework). I keep everything to a bare minimum and organized ♡

I fell right into the KonMari trend and LOVE that I have less. I'm always purging, only keeping what I love and only buying if I love and need it. It's an ongoing thing in my home. Your right about less is more. My counters are less cluttered and it feels great!!! xoxo

I naturally became a minimalist when my son started exploring, less stuff means less to clean up after 😂

Agree totally. I'm a big hoarder/uncontrollable shopper. Sucker for packaging /pretty stuff. It's all crap. The day i realised i have a problem and how moving into homes and then sadly throwing away expired almost new products is wasting so much of my hard earned money, replaced that thrill /momentarily satisfaction of buying something for self :) minimal living is the way to go!

I've recently started practicing minimalism and I must say, it has transformed my life. I love my space, I love my things, and most importantly I love that feeling of owning fewer but quality things. I'm an OCD compacted individual and it is so refreshing to know that everything you own you absolutely love and have use for. Yes, it's a work in progress, but the results are rewarding mentally and physically.

I've had to pair down for my sanitys sake. I went from living from a 3 bed room 2 story house to living in a 2 bedroom apartment. So i had to get rid of a lot of stuff.. it felt great!!! :)
