I went fragrance free when I first found your channel 5 years ago and my eczema thanks you DR Dray 😍

I developed a fragrance allergy in my 30's. It's not just contact dermatitis or eczema. It's also inhalation: detergent aisle at the store, perfume, cologne, candles. I've encountered many (and I mean MANY) people that comment that I'm overreacting or just being annoying. It's real and it can be a real problem (rash, sneezing, not being able to breathe). I've spent a lot of time reading labels to eliminate as much fragrance in all of my products. I've also had to eliminate essential oils for the same reasons. And, it was Dr. Dray that informed that Fragrance Free and Unscented are NOT the same thing! Thank you for spreading the information.

Developed fragrance allergies, as well as other allergies, in my mid-fifties. I think you do a great service alerting people to potential problems with fragrance in skincare.

My lips and body react to fragrance and EOs in skincare/laundry products now so I figured my face was probably next in developing sensitivity and cut out fragrance. You are one of the few dermatologists who educates on fragrance and elevates fragrance free skincare products. I appreciate that so much. It feels irresponsible for derms to say "oh fragrance isn't a problem until it is". Well, we don't all have the luxury of being specialists who can easily handle fallout so I'd rather be cautious. If I want a scent experience, there are other ways to create it. Thank you for all you do for this lovely skincare community you've created!

Omg this problem just recently got real for me. Please listen to this woman! I had the worst reaction to a body lotion that was basically all fragrance. Had no problem with fragrance before and now I’m covered in a terrible painful rash. PLEASE be careful and mindful of what you put on your skin and remember when Dr Dray warns her viewers about fragrance she’s not fear mongering she’s just genuinely warning you.

Thanks Dr Dray!

I have an actual fragrance allergy, so I appreciate more products being fragrance free!

Thanks Dr. Dray! Also, you forgot migraines. I don't have any of the skin issues or respiratory issues you mentioned. But I have noticed that most fragrances trigger my migraines. So I always appreciate it when you point out fragrance in products.

I have rosacea and couldn’t figure out why almost everything triggered a reaction. Started following Dr Dray and since avoiding fragrance and essential oils, no more papules!!!

I went fragrance free after finding your channel three years ago, and I was finally able to determine that it wasn't SUNSCREEN I was allergic to, but fragrance and oxybenzone. I now use fragrance free mineral sunscreen, and my hyperpigmentation had significantly improved!!

I appreciate you pointing out fragrance. Hopefully it’s encouraging these companies to create more fragrance free options. I’ve only found one inexpensive shaving cream brand in stores with a fragrance free option.

The thing is, it's not just people with a certified fragrance allergy. Certain diseases can make you more sensitive to fragrance!

I can be sensitive to some things (including food) but I was almost always inclined to be fragrance free even before finding this channel. I just figured if I wanted to smell a particular way, I'd wear a perfume I liked. I even like my cleaning products fragrance free or mildly scented. I have no desire for my dishes or rooms to smell like a forest, a citrus bowl or apple pie.

I'm very grateful to people who mention if the products have fragrance because I suffer from rosacea and my skin doesn't like fragrance at all. I'm only using fragrance free skin care and deodorant. Thank you for pointing it out.

Please continue to point out products with fragrance. I do not view it as fear mongering. My face cannot tolerate fragrance. Your product reviews help me make informed skincare decisions 😘

Hi Dr Dray I have rosacea, eczema and migraines - fragrance is NOT my friend. Knowing if a skincare product is free of fragrance is my first criteria, as to whether it is of interest to me. Others using scented skincare is up to them mostly, with the only caveat being if it is so strong it causes issues for other people. People should be aware it can trigger respiratory distress and migraines in others, if they're overusing strong perfumes. If your perfume enters the room before you do, it's probably that you're overusing it. Otherwise if you want to use fragranced skincare etc then I don't have an issue with that and you do you. This is a real issue for many people and not fear mongering, as for a section of the population it can be really detrimental to their health. I cannot even go near a Lush store without triggering a migraine and most assuredly could never work near one. I don't have a problem with other people enjoying their products, although I do think there are better products on the market at a similar price (they don't use many actives and are all about the scent rather than performance, but again each to their own). This is just an example and of course there are other brands I wouldn't/couldn't use. I mostly watch skincare reviews of fragrance free products, because that's what I buy. I don't have any issue with other people buying products with fragrance, nor reviewing said fragranced items. I am glad there has been more of a demand for fragrance free items, as this has given rise to more choices for me and others like me. There are still so many fragranced items out there for those who want to use them, why is it an issue for there being more choices for those who don't/can't? Best wishes.

I 0d’d on fragrance and thru the years became more sensitive to it.

If someone has used scented dryer sheets, air poisoners in their car or house (even public places like stores, my local DMV, etc…), my lips and tongue get numb. I can taste the chemicals in the scents.

My throat & sinuses feel like they’re on fire. Things will taste like soap for a week or longer.

I did some web wandering and learned it’s called Multiple Chemical Sensitivity.

No rashes/hives, no sneezing or red watery eyes. No visible symptoms that could indicate a allergy. Zyrtec doesn’t do a thing when I’ve been exposed.

This is something that started years ago with Glade plug-ins. My glass of water tasted soapy/flowery.

Canada recognises it but not the U.S. We’re told it’s in our heads….🤯

I get annoyed at some popular YouTubers i really like because they minimize the potential harm fragrance can cause and sort of discount it as "fear mongering" if people say to avoid things that have fragrance.

Another important point is that fragrance triggers headaches to many people! I used a scented sunscreen a few years ago, and I got bad headaches with it, and even if the smell was nice, having it on my face close to my nose was an unpleasant experience. Since then, I went fragrance free in skincare and didn’t get headaches from my skincare products again.

Fragrance is problematic, in my opinion. If someone doesn’t mind it, it’s fine, but avoiding it and warning against its potential adverse effects is definitely not fear mongering. Thank you Dr. Dray and please keep pointing out the existence of fragrance or lack of it in skincare products.

I have tried to be fragrance free for many years. Your content is one of the few that provides recommendations for fragrance free products. Thank you so much Dr. Dray!

Well said Dr Dray! Just because you may think that you don't know anyone with a fragrance sensitivity doesnt mean that you don't...perhaps they just haven't shared that information with you. Products are labelled "fragrance free" for the consumer to make up their own mind. No one is trying to spoil anyone's fun by forcing them to use fragrance free products. Just because something is labelled "fragrance free" does not mean that is can only be used by people with fragrance sensitivities or allergies.
The same goes for food. Just because something is labelled vegetarian/vegan/Halal etc. doesn't mean that it can only be purchased and consumed by those who follow these diets. It also does not mean that supermarkets are conspiring to convert everyone into people who follow these diets.
BTW, I am not allergic to fragrance, but sometimes choose the fragrance free option esp. on leave on products (eg. Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair). I also don't want any strong fragrance (eg. body lotion) that will interfere with the scent of my perfume (it's too $$$ to cover up!)
Out of courtesy, I don't wear perfume when visiting the doctor; they just appreciate when you show up on time... hair, body and clothes freshly washed.
