How can you find time to write after a long day at work? If you want to become a writer while also working a full-time job, this will be one of the most difficult challenges. Poet Dana Gioia discusses ways to organize your time in a simple way so that you can write in a busy life.

*"No day without a line."* I will pursue this from now on. The irony in my case is that I had more time to write and translate poetry when I was working at a job that had nothing to do with literature --and before the advent of the Internet/Email--but since I became a college teacher of English and English Literature, there was always that nagging feeling that there was something I needed to do to improve the courses I was teaching. However, if I set aside those 90 minutes a day, I'm sure I will benefit from both Dana Gioia's video and Pliny the Elder's adage.

Very instructive and inspirational; thanks. I've just found your videos and am sure to watch as many as I can. (Ironically, instead of spending time writing!) It's great to hear some practical advice from such an established poet.

A lot of practical (and poetical) wisdom packed into a short video. It's the ninety daily minutes (or whatever consistently applied time one needs) that also underlies such ability to condense.

I don't even have a full-time job and I'm about to set this as a goal, that way, when I do get a job I'll already be in the habit of writing daily

Wow! It's such a simple thing, but it could change a career or a life: "ONE. GOOD. LINE." (or one good paragraph) --> This takes the seemingly impossible and makes it feel DOABLE. Even the most magnificent structure must be built just one well-placed stone at a time.

If the weather permits it I write outside, sit up straight and breath fresh oxygen. Writing in a room can make me drowsy and get too comfortable.
Thanks for sharing, very informative 👍

I used to write tons of poetry but I hardly write at all now and when I do I think it’s rubbish so I give up . I am writing a book but it’s very slow .. 🐢 Always got A s at school for English and did well in creative writing as well 🤷‍♀️

What if you have a full-time job AND multiple young kids? Does anyone have any thoughts about how does the family dynamic impacts the when and how of writing every day?

No mention of the legitimate demands a partner and possibly children place upon one … ?

What a great piece of advice! To the point, doable, actually something I could see myself do!
