Canada housing crisis: 3% of renters were evicted in past year

If you look at all the renters in Canada, three per cent were evicted in the past year and this comes as demand for rentals has outpaced supply in most major markets, boosting rental costs to new heights.

The trend is driven by increasing immigration and home ownership costs that forced many who were looking to buy to rent instead.

Anne Gaviola has more.

The Jagmeet NDP immigration strategy is working as planned.

I've been evicted 3 times in the past 15 months ... I pay my bills, I'm a great tenant, but that doesn't matter when all the landlords are losing their shirts.
I dont blame home owners, I blame our crappy, useless, incompetent government for destroying our way of life .

the decommodification of housing would solve the housing crisis.

Unfortunately, unless something drastic is done, this pain is only going to get worse.

My great Canadian neighbours have gone.
The new owner/landlord (from Brampton) asked them to pay double their rent or leave. So, they went.
They were good people, so didn't fight it.
New neighbours are like 10 people (newcomers) in a small bungalow.

So my Canadian neighbours get pushed out, to make money for Brampton landlord, to make money off of newcomers.
I am fed up and planning on selling and moving myself, but there is nothing to buy!
And then we have the 'out of touch' government with ridiculous programs that do not help!

Additionally, I saw another great family get kicked out due to rent (and she was pregnant). Replaced with new tenants who were also good, then those get kicked up, all due to rental price hikes. People are constantly being kicked out! Sure there are good/bad tenants/landlords, so there needs to be a better system for everyone.

I'm hoping there will be a housing crisis so I can buy cheaply when I sell a few houses in 2025. As a backup plan, I've been thinking about purchasing stocks. What advice do you have for choosing the best buying time? On the one hand, I continue to read and see trading earnings of over $500k each week. On the other side, I keep hearing that the market is out of control and experiencing a dead cat bounce. Why does this happen?

It is sickening . So much greed in housing market . We really need a crash to fix this mess . Yes that will be Great Recession but we need it to pin down greedy housing cartels to ground forever . Same as US after 2008 financial meltdown down now every one knows investing and hyping up housing market is very misleading wrong .hosing is for people to live in not a casino to bet on .

Can't blame the landlords when the govt starts increasing the interest rates and expects the rent to stay the same won't help

A handful of corrupt officials shouldn’t own and control the means of production, distribution and exchange. Workers make the world run, workers should run the world.💙🌎🇨🇦

Trudo's "Renters bill of rights" = don't pay your rent we will make it impossible for landlord to evict you anyway

Have a look at the squatter problem south of the border before you make it more difficult to evict tenants.

What happened to rent control? How is that landlords can raise the rent more then the allotted amount. This is why seniors and others are being displaced. Who can afford thousands of dollars for rent. How is that affordable. Build new houses that nobody can afford to buy or live in so they are forced to rent and pay through the nose for it.

Let them have their empty buildings, investors will have to sell. Don't buy and the prices drop. We the consumer have all the power if applied effectively in every aspect of our lives.

There are two Canadas, one for the alliance, another for all the rest. Guess which side sets the rules of the game?

This is only going to get way way worse until something drastic is done. I fear for our future.
