Is it dangerous to stop drinking cold turkey?

When I write a blog article about stopping drinking there is always at least one person who objects, stating that quitting drinking without medical supervision is lethal.

This is a very important subject and before we get into it let me give you a disclaimer. I am not a doctor and I do not offer medical advice. I am a former problem drinker who has helped many thousands of people to escape the trap of daily drinking.

Before you make any significant changes to your lifestyle you should of course consult a GP.

All that said, there is an important distinction between the stereotypical alcoholic you see portrayed on TV and in the movies. And the type of functional alcoholic that ends up at the Stop Drinking Expert website.

If you are ready to learn how to stop drinking check out my website today.

I am exactly that person, you described. My whole life is perfect....but I don’t trust Alcohol anymore. My hangovers are getting horrible, my body is telling me it’s had enough. And I noticed me slacking in attention for my kids, my house, my school(doctorate program), and our business. The guilt is overwhelming, that drinking is now a chore. I’ve stopped my heavy smoking a few years ago. That same feeling is back, but now with Booze. My children deserve a full-time sober Mother.

I have been drinking for more than 45 years now on a daily basis, but in a moderate way. About three or four drinks a night. But now I can see my memory and mental clarity deteriorating and I feel I have to make an effort to find better fysical and mental health. So I have not been drinking now for one week. I really hope to find and keep the right motivation. Thanks for your informative videos! They inspire a lot.

Over 4 months sober now. Quit cold turkey after drinking pretty much every day since i was 19. 28 now. Everything in my life changed for the better just a few weeks in. No more depressing thoughts, missed work, disappointing loved ones and friends, goals and targets are getting reached and my financial situation has never been more stable in my life thus far! Good luck to those who choose to quit, it really is worth it! :)

I love your videos. It was like you were describing me in your video LOL. I have quit probably 20 times in the last year. And I'm trying so hard to go cold turkey and leave it behind. Your videos are very inspirational. I ordered two of your books. I can't wait to read them

Done it myself a few times, not pleasant, no sleep for a week and a half, but once you get that first nights good sleep you know you are on the mend. Would rather suffer for a short period than have a lifetime of turmoil.

The mild anxiety is the killer for me. I can't think of anything useful or positive and I feel it physically in my chest when I breath and stomach. Today I'm going to push past it and not drink.

I was a light beer drinker, occasional beer drinker, social beer drinker in my 20's and my 30's.I stopped drinking beer in 2010 cold turkey.I never was addicted to beer and other alcoholic drinks like my ex friends are.

My story is a little different from most of the comments here. My girlfriend worked in a hospital and told me I'd really suffer hallucinations and all kinds if I tried to quit. I wasn't a heavy drinker, but hadn't gone a night without alcohol for about 7 years. I cut down to 3 cans of strong beer a night, for about a week. Then cut down to 2 cans for another week. Then went cold turkey. I expected terrible withdrawal symptoms - but they didn't come. It was much easier than I anticipated. I felt a little uneasy the first few nights. But nothing really bad. I was much more alert at work, and I lost 36lbs in 7 months without dieting or exercise. The worst thing was plucking up the courage to try it. When I did, I felt stupid for not trying it years before. Go for it good people. You can handle a little anxiety for 5 days. Everything after is positive!

A sentence you'll never hear anyone say: "Thank God I had that bottle of wine yesterday evening."

I tried to participate in a alcohol related study at a university recently. The prescreening doctor informed me I had stage 2 hypertension and after a blood draw revealed my liver enzymes were sky high which made me ineligible for the study. I learned this morning that I had a problem.

I’ve been sober going on 6 weeks after four years of parting and drinking every weekend. I have great job and a beautiful family. Now that I have quite I feel so lost sometimes like I don’t know what I’m supposed to do or who to be. Since I stoped the guilt feeling is gone and I have been completing a lot of the projects that i set aside for along time. It’s hard to explain what I’m going through but it’s like I’m unsure of everything and my thoughts keep running running. The anxiety on a daily basis is getting easier to deal with but it’s still here. I’m actually not sure if I have quite for good or just taking a break. I’ve come further than I’ve expected so every time I get the urge I challenge myself to keep going. Thanks for the information I’m taking it one day at a time.

I stopped for two years and relapsed. A year of excessive drinking, its expensive and I nearly lost my job. At recent times 3 bottles of wine a day and some strong 8% beer. I am now on 36 hrs cold turkey and I am anxious but fine. I have done other research about how to enhance the recovery of my liver also. Once I make my mind up and am in the groove I don't stop. Spotting the triggers is the most important thing. The information you presented was excellent so thank you very much. I never thought about it that the alcohol industry do not want to loose its drug industry. That is what it is. It has no value nutritionally to the body which is why the Liver aims at it first even though it has other jobs to do. Great Video . Thanks Xander

Thank you for the advice. I've put off quitting several times because of this myth.

Amazing video. The only thing I would add as a caveat in terms of being extra cautious is if you are also using any Benzodiazepines. Not only with this greatly compound your physical addiction, but this is exactly what would be prescribed to "take the edge off" by a GP.
