If she heard or smelled the pyroclastic flow barrelling towards her house, she probably tried to hide her face in the bed thinking it would save her. Obviously the cushions couldn't save her any more than the money could, and the coins must have been burning hot once the flow reached her because it suffocates and burns all at once.
