Milton Friedman was one of the great free thinker's of the 21st century. Maybe he was optimistic, but endless pessimism and corruption of economic and political powers, has made us all cynical and sad and depressing.

The great thing about Friedman was his belief in the human spirit. Unfortunately,
most of these folks lack that vision. They want to fix things.

It annoys me when people say "Britain took 200 years to expand, when China took 30". At the time of Britains expansion, it was all innovation from subsistance to industrialised. China has not had to innovate, just copy the model of others. What happens to China when it reaches the level of the USA and cannot copy anymore, and it requires innovation? Innovation takes time, and most importantly-Freedom. China will stagnate without freedom

He was right it was not perfect then but it still has failed to stagnate and as a result is one of the richest cities in the world. One of the few in economics who deserves the Noble Prize.

The freer the economy (greater absence of licensing and regulation) the more opportunity there is for the poor. Labor regs - like minimum wage and licensing - create barriers to low-skill workers. They do not have the option to work as an apprentice for low or no wages instead of assuming huge student debt. Cut the size of government and bring back the free market. Maybe Rand Paul 2020?

A country focus on social issues rather than the economy will create a welfare state with a big government and many interest groups demanding their rights. A country focus on economy will create a productive society with more opportunity for more people and less dependent on government.
