This is gold, Wayne! Now that I have a boat, just need to wait for the weather to clear to try out those spots you've mentioned. Much appreciated. Tx

A section on etiquette is required as is a section on best practice on how to release undersized mackerel. As someone who has fished school mackerel in the bay for around 40 years (we used to just get one or two for a feed then move onto other targets), the escalation of fishing effort on mackeral over the past 5 years due to these various videos sees many fishos being run over and crowded out of popular beacons. I've seen some disgusting behaviour by people driving over lines, yelling abuse and destroying other peoples fishing experience. Rule of thumb: if more than one or two boats are on a beacon, move on, do not assume your late entry will be appreciated. The fish are also getting smaller due to the increased fishing effort, which is evidence of growth overfishing. This means more undersized mackerel are being hooked, but most people seem to have no idea how to release mackerel in good condition. I pinch down the barbs of my lures then if the mackerel looks borderline I loosen the line and try to shake them off in the water. If you are new to the game but intend to target mackerel its a good idea to put a fish measuring sticker on the outside of the boat, so the fish remains wet while you learn to assess their size. If they are undersized, try not to handle them at all and if they don't shake off use long nose pliers to release them boatside. If they are clearly above legal bring them over the side, stun them with a knock on the head then ikijime (see www.ikijime.com for details), dehook and bleed into a bucket, then into an ice slurry. If they are not treated this way after capture, they will turn to mush and you will have killed and wasted a perfectly good fish for nothing.
