Cleaning your makeup brushes is necessary to keep bacteria and old makeup from clogging pores...but what's actually the best way to clean them? Producer Nico Reyes tried to find the best way to clean makeup brushes by trying three different methods at three different price points. Nico tried the EcoTools Makeup Brush Cleansing Shampoo, the Sigma Spa Express Brush Cleaning Mat, and the StylPro brush cleaner and dryer. After trying each method on her own dirty makeup brushes, she ranked the methods based on which was least damaging to the brushes, how fast they cleaned the brushes, and how well they cleaned the brushes. At the end, Nico decided which method for cleaning your makeup brushes is the best value for your money.

I went into Sephora with my son, who at the time, was an infant. I had a basket of items and asked a worker which brush cleaner was the best. She told me to use Johnson & Johnson’s baby shampoo, that I didn’t need to spend a fortune on cleaner that’s basically doing the same. Which having an infant, she figured I already had it on deck. Just a little tip for anyone wanting to choose the best gentle cleaner for brushes and beauty blenders :)

Point your brushes downward when washing them, holding them upwards into the stream of water will cause damage to the glue in the ferrule. Happy brush cleaning!

How NOT to clean your makeup brushes like she did in the video:
1 - never point your brush upwards so that all the water can easily gather at the ferrule and loosen glue which makes bristles fall out. Rather always point it downwards (kinda logical)
2 - don't wet the entire brush... only necessary for the bristles
3 - after you washed them, gently shape the bristles into their original form so that they can dry that way again. That's why her brushes' bristles were out of place...
4 - don't just wash your brushes once a year

(this all coming from an actual qualified makeup artist.)

do NOT wet the whole brush like that at 1:57 that can lift the glue on the brush and is just overall damaging

I’m so afraid that the Style-Pro would damage my brushes. It seems very harsh to me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I use an antibacterial hand soap for all my synthetic brushes and scrub them with a silicone mat I purchased from ebay. For foundation and concealer brushes I add a tiny bit of almond oil (or olive oil will do the trick) with my antibacterial soap to break down the residue product faster (this really works for stained brushes). Natural haired brushes I wash with baby shampoo.

I'm using a bar of soap to clean my brushes and it works perfectly fine to remove residue.

I use safeguard the plain white or you can use Irish Spring soap

The shampoo isn’t healthy for your hand? Then what do you use to shampoo your head? Your feet? xD

Nah, I have a offbrand version of the Pro and I will never go back to the traditional method. The first use will always take time but after that, its so easy to use because you automatically know which brush goes in what attachment.

Instead of the pad, I started using the teeth of my comb. Seems to give enough friction to clean the brushes.

I have been using this method for 2 years now and works like magic. I use the stigma mat to wash my brushes and style pro to dry them. Style pro has 3 settings so i use the highest one to dry my brushes off that takes like literally 2 min to get my brushes completely dry..
