The Science Activities Club invites you all to attend the 2nd student talk on Mathematics for this semester. Archisman Bhattacharjee is a student in the School of Mathematical Sciences. He will be delivering a talk on "Classical Straightedge and Compass Constructions" on behalf of SAC. The talk is mostly targeted for undergraduate students. All undergraduate students (especially 1st years) are encouraged to attend the talk. The details of the talk are listed below :

Date & Time: 3rd January 2021 (Sunday), 6 pm IST

Speaker: Archisman Bhattacharjee, School of Mathematical Sciences, B17

Abstract: In this talk, we will make an effort to answer some classical geometric problems posed by the Greeks. For example, whether it is possible to trisect a given angle using only straightedge and compass.

One way to solve these problems is to try through trial and error. But in this talk, we make a well defined mathematical setup to approach them. As a tool, we use simple algebraic objects like Field extension after defining them.

Prerequisites: In principle, a high school student can be asked to answer the problems we are going to discuss in this talk. Hence, there are no prerequisites.
