Abstract Algebra 84: Field extensions for straight-edge and compass constructions

Abstract: Without being rigorous or precise, we give the rough idea of how abstract algebra (and in particular, field extensions) can be used to prove that certain straight-edge and compass constructions are not possible in general. These include trisecting an arbitrary angle, squaring a circle, and doubling the cube.
