When Traditional Fish Farming Gets Help From Science & Innovation In Singapore

After more than 20 years in the IT industry, Malcolm Ong turned his hand full time to aquaculture. Today, the founder of The Fish Farmer owns 4 sea-based farms, operating on traditional methods, producing about 1,000 tonnes of fish a year - milk fish, grey mullet, red snapper, barramundi (Asian sea bass), golden pomfret and sea perch.

But he faces a challenge: How to double production sustainably? To do this he has joined hands with scientists under the Singapore Food Agency's AquaPolis R&D programme. The goal for Malcolm is to develop superior fingerlings with faster growth rates, lower mortality from common fish diseases, and higher Omega-3 content.

Great to have our own singapore fish farming. I have bought them in Fairprice and is fresh. We should support our local product ! Also, vegetables & Egg farming too. Is safe, fresh and full of nutrition. 👍

As a Johorean Online FishMonger, which sources farmed fish from Kukup Malaysia, i would like to pay my respect to Malcolm & Ah Guan. Your mission is truly admirable.
I cannot help but feel a sense of disappointment when I think about the state of aquaculture in Malaysia. It is deplorably bad, to say the least. We have the potential to produce high-quality farmed fish, but we lack the technology and resources to do so effectively.

There is an incredible potential for aquaculture in Malaysia. Specifically, the Kukup mangrove forest, one of the largest in the world. This vast ecosystem provides a unique habitat for a diverse range of marine life, making it an ideal location for sustainable aquaculture. Additionally, the farming costs in Malaysia are much cheaper compared to Singapore. This could give you an edge in the competitive market, allowing you to produce high-quality farmed fish at a more affordable price.

I urge you to consider exploring opportunities in Malaysia. Kukup is just 30 minutes away from Second-Link bridge. Your expertise in AI technology and sustainable aquaculture could make a significant impact in our region, and help us develop a thriving industry.

Hopefully i could meet Malcolm along my seafood journey.

Hard work, very hard work, no young local would ever want to work in one nowadays whatever the technologies unlike what the previous gen of locals born before the 1970s did.

open water farming is always vulnerable to algal bloom, it would be better to start investing slowly in closed environment considering increasing level of pollution and increasing water temperatures.

Hello, we are a photovoltaic energy storage equipment company, after measuring the use of photovoltaic energy storage-related equipment, but also have to reduce the use of electricity by 60%, I don't know if there is a chance to cooperate.

In conclusion, there is only one real way of life for an honest person: be a criminal. He will be deemed a criminal who has broken the law sharing ‘military secrets’.
