ABOUT CYBERPUNK: EDGERUNNERS

I remember when they announced this it was going to be a long wait and now it's already here, boy does time sure fly.

My favorite thing about this song for David is that he is fighting against the system the whole series, and in the end he stands defiant no matter what. One of David’s core traits is his aversion to authority and hatred of the systems that ruined his life. This whole show is him raging against the corporate machine.

I miss the era where we waited for Cyberpunk 2077 to release, the months leading up to that game had an insane level of hype no other game could match. Seeing this announcement back then only added to the excitement; man, nostalgia is a beautiful feeling.

I never thought I'd ever listen to a Franz ferdinand song on an anime op based on a video-game that was based on an amazing table top game...

We truly live on a weird time-line huh

The Cp2077 setting is so interesting, and I'm so hyped to see what they do with it

Fun fact: this version of the song has the 'So burn this city, burn this city' line left out. Maybe for timing of the song and the visuals to sync, but also possibly to show that one can't just burn Night City. Rather, the city wipes you away.

You know the thing I love about this opening. It literally tells his entire story extremely summed up. Of course I'm not going to say anything here because spoilers.

Cyberpunk 2077's story was actually insanely good.

Excited for this.

This OP style is like a cyberpunk mix of Cowboy Bebop & Persona. Simple, yet strikingly effective & aesthetically chaotic in great way.

It's funny because this song says "this fire is outta control" and the trailer when jhonny appears he says "we have a city to burn", i love that reference, this show is gonna be amazing

Now that the anime has been released it's kinda interesting to analyze the opening : [SPOILER]

During the whole opening you have two important elements: David and the background.
- The images that are showed in David are all human being, either being younger versions of himself (mostly at the beginning of the opening it seems) or pictures of his friends or foes. It can show how he is evolving in the show, without any friends at the beginning, and then he meets Lucy and her crew. And those new friends are obviously important to him and are all the time in his mind (literally in this opening)
- For the background, it's the city. Night City.

Most of the time, those two elements are against each other, one being blue, and the other one being red. Two colors that often represent adversity (in video game you often have a red team and a blue team for instance) I think that if sometimes they switch color, it is just to show that there is not really a "good character" and a "bad character." They just have their own objectives, which most of the time are opposites (even though at 0:36 they are both kind of purple (red + blue), which could either show that they melt into one entity (that Night City is eating David, and that in the same time David gets more and more control on NC) or that they are just not that different from each other, with good sides and bad sides. One thing is sure : It's a fight. David, representing all the other inhabitants of Night City, is fighting the City. It's a really important theme in both the anime and the video game, where the city is humanized and is shown as the enemy to fight and to destroy.

The movements of David also represent its evolution during the anime. First, he is just standing, like a spectator, then starts to move. At 0:43, he looks more and more like a psychopath with his hands and his eye. And then, that's the explosion. A lot of red for blood and we have a first peak at how his life is going to end with a headshot in a lot of explosions.

When he starts to disassemble, I guess it is also a metaphor for his insanity due to all those implants.

And the final shot of the opening is a character shooting David in the head. It's the City itself, represents as a human, who has killed David. It's the end of the opening and of the anime. And the City has won.

I think that the reason why David is shot twice in the opening is because he dies twice in the anime: when he starts to lose control and to have more and more implants, losing his humanity to fight the city. It's like he is already dead because he already made his choice, the choice of becoming a legend of Night City. And we all know that the legends of NC are the one who died trying to fight it.
And then he dies for real at the end, killed by Adam.

Anyway i'm a huge fan of the Cyberpunk univers and I'm really thankful to CD Project and Trigger for making all of these awesome stories in this dark and incredible world !

If you have any other analyse about the opening, don't hesitate to comment them ! And have a good day :)

This opening was what I was excited for the most each episode!! I was itching for them to cue the extremely cool electric guitar beat and bright yellow on the screen and jammed so much to it!!! It's sooo cool, catchy and addictive!!! Cyberpunk Edgerunners what a show! Truly fell in love with it AFTER starting and finishing the show yesterday!! Kind of have the guitar stuck in my head now!

Please God, don't let this be another Netflix deception. They have everything to make it awesome, even Akira Yamaoka

Very unusual choice of opening song but it feels like it fits. Cannot wait to witness all the craziness Trigger brings with their animation.

I just bought Cyberpunk the other day, and I'm so sad that it's reputation is stained from it's release, because it's a fantastic game now. Constantly stable fps on my slightly more average PC, and 0 crashes at all. I hope this series promotes the game more and it becomes popular again.
