I felt the same about Barney and Norma's relationship in the first episode. I wasn't fully engaged with their dynamic until a few episodes in. I really like their friendship by the end of the season

You know, i relate to Barney, i may not be trans, but i also had a rough relationships with my grandma due to being gay, and i swear the little dialogue he has at the start of the episode with his mom is exactly the same as one i had with my mom.

This show was fun! The musical episode has to be the strongest episode of this series overall IMO, also that episode before it where Barney, Norma and Pugsley go back to find that lost Pauline commercial, that one gave me heavy Gumball "The Disaster/The Rerun" vibes Nice to see Jay talk abt this show since I haven't seen many ppl in the cartoon community talk abt it

I would like to note that for everything that happens in this show, it's rated TV-Y7. I disagree that this is a target audience for young adults. I really don't think it is. It a show for kids that young adults can also enjoy.

If it becomes a hit, this should be enough to give Netflix a renaissance it needs to bring back the animation department. I understand it was difficult for them after losing a lot of subscribers due to the competition, but they can still succeed....and if they manage, they should also forget the idea of putting ads.

this show is honestly one of my favorites. it has the same vibes as some of my other favorite animated shows. the representation has also been great. my little brother wanted to watch the show with me, mostly because of pugsley. Im trans, so learning that barney was trans was perfect. he doesn't know what being trans even is, so having a character that he enjoys already is just great. I was able to tell him I was trans and he was so supportive because of the character. its not just like a one off mention of his queerness, its an active thing that also isn’t his only personality trait. sorry for going on a long tangent, it was just a great opportunity for me. I also found that barney and norma’s relationship at the start wasn’t very compelling, but I see that as they haven’t gotten super close or comfortable together. the closer they got as friends, the more I started to enjoy their chemistry. I am glad it is getting another season, and I hope to see how they can expand everythung

As someone with social anxiety they hit the part of Norma so well it's scary. Bringing in Patrick Stump for the second to last episode was the absolute icing on the cake though.

I watched this show and let me tell you, the season finale was one of the best I’ve ever seen. Especially when Norma sings “you’re my Frankenstein and I’m your monster” and then the “phantom of the theme park” coming right after that scene. Those few minutes were better than entire movies and shows I’ve seen, and I’m talking about good movies and shows here

If you’ve not seen kipo and the age of the wonderbeasts yet that show 100% deserves a video, all 3 seasons are out, Netflix original. Good representation, really interesting world, good writing and story telling.

As an aspie, I would like to say that Norma is the type representation I look for in autistic characters. It's nice to see someone who isn't either completely incapable of operating on their own in this world, or is some super genius, or is both. Instead the show opts to cover the type of autism where the person is just horrible at picking up on social queues and has no idea how to interact with others. It's a type of Autism that is very real and personal to me, and it's nice to see a show attempting to educate people on the fact that the weird quiet fellow student or coworker might actually be craving social interaction and just doesn't know how to get it, that you might have to put in some effort into helping them. Due to the lack of representation of this form of Autism, most people just think the quiet person in the group is just some weird anti social that you should avoid. They don't know that they could be Autistic.

I do have the one criticism that she seems to get around her social problems too easily. This is also a criticism I have of Barney and Logs' relationship, as it is very underdeveloped. Like all it takes is 1 beech episode and suddenly she doesn't have problems. It's not like she stops doing the things that would turn people off either, she very easily neglects her attempts at romance to satisfy her hyper obsession (look up hyper obsession if you don't already know what it is in relation to Autism), but her love interest sticks with her. I find it a very hurtful message that one just needs to hang out with people and now everyone will be your chum. I'm not saying you should shut up and be "normal", but that friendship is a 2-way road and that you'll have to put in effort to achieve it. This is a fact that I still struggle with and it made me feel invisible to see her not suffer from it.

If any of what I said intrigued you, then I recommend Komi Can't Communicate. It's not a master piece in social anxiety representation, it's very over the top and exaggerative in its representation. Not only is the titular KomI over incapable of communicating, but the problem is solved super easily as well. But the show never mocks her and it does take the time to demonstrate some of the serious issues Komi faces, which somehow makes it seem more realistic than Norma, despite actually being less realistic. It's just a wholesome show that I recommend as comfort food to anyone with social anxiety.

I think Barney and Norma are in a good place in the first episode. They're not really friends yet, just coworkers, but slowly get to know each other better. If anything Barney is more focused on his crush and she becomes friends with Badyah a bit and I think that's just fine.

This just so obviously looks like it’s about to be one of those big shows.

In fact, it looks like like it’s made to specifically BE one.
