I’m 47 years old and from the moment I was born I was listening to everything from classic rock to roots reggae and everything in between all thanks to my dad. He was a rough guy with a big heart. I’m a white guy who grew up in low income housing projects and the majority of my dad’s friends were Jamaican and I grew up in this culture regardless of my skin colour. I shed a tear every time I hear any music my dad was playing in my youth including bob marley and appreciate how ahead of his time he was in this crazy messed up world. When you’re at war or headed towards war, this is for you. There’s nothing you haven’t done to help prevent hostilities from breaking out, but nothing you’ve tried has worked. Bob lays the blame squarely on humanity, in that we have opted to do things in our way, but our greed (“eating up all the flesh from off the earth”) serves as an obstacle to our ability to forge a lasting peace with our adversaries. Our toxic political discourse in the USA, comes to mind. Each camp has to have it all, have it their way, and to hell what the other side believes or thinks. But as Bob says in the beginning of the song, someone will surely pay for this, and it’s the so-called leaders who cause conflict through greed, which in turn leads to massive loss of life. It’s not the people that make these decisions. We have no friends in high society after all.
