Learn how to turn a radiator off or isolate it from the central heating system in this no nonsense DIY video tutorial.

To turn off a radiator and stop it from heating up you need to close either one of the valves. This can be a thermostatic radiator valve, lockshield or any type of valve.

To isolate a radiator from the central heating system, you will need to close both valves.

Isolating a radiator might be useful if you have a leak, you want to remove the radiator for decorating or replacing, or you might want to replace the bleed valve or remove the bleed valve to add a chemical to the system.

Some lockshield valves will have a screw in the centre which will need to be removed first to remove the head.

Some manual valve heads might be knackered inside and just keep turning. If so, remove the head and close it like a lockshield valve.

Almost all radiator valves need to be turned clockwise as far as they will go to turn them off. There are quarter-turn radiator valves out there but they are very rare.
