For anyone considering doing this: Don't use a regular needle, use a gramaphone needle. Unless you're not using valuable records, of course.

It's a cool project, but one shouldn't attempt this with a record that they care about. The same goes for the Soundwagon/Record Runner.

In our old gramaphone record players there were no amplifiers and speakers sound was reproduced in this way. In a good sense this is a best attempt. With the same you can make dynamic pickup.

Did this a kid, Never worried about the records, you always get a new one if needed since that pretty much all we had.

Vinyl Record: "Kill me"

it actually is fine if you use older vinyls from the 40s and before because they were made of materials designed to withstand the wear and tear of an needle due to the fact they were played in gramophones which work using this same principal

I felt a great disturbance in the Force as if millions of records suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. Hehe. Seriously though, as purely a scientific or engineering project to do at home to gain an appreciation of the technology behind antique phonograph players and modern turntables, I approve of the effort as long as one is only testing the project using a scratchy, beat-up disposable record. NO ONE in their right mind should use this DIY project to play a prized collection of vinyl records or old 78 rpm records (which are still valuable in certain cases for particular genres and artists). In the end though, one has to evaluate how many hours are actually worth spending on a project like this when the ultimate result will be a phonograph player that cannot reliably or safely play records. So, it's an academic exercise, but it's still a fascinating hobby to learn about technology; very cool and ingenious. :)

This is what a record sounds like with no electronic amplification.

I love how The Q projects are becoming more involved.

I mean can’t we all just appreciate all the work that went into it instead of criticising it

If you hate a certain vinyl and decide to listen it for the last time before destroying it, THIS is how you do it!
