To kill boredom and to show my kids some fun experiment - we all made a phonograph. This is really amazing device which allows to record and then play the sound. It was invented by Edison.

In my opinion it's really cool science experiment for kids and parents and schools.

I can't imagine how haunting it must've felt to hear your own voice being echoed back for the first time on a machine they invented

The first recording device was actually the phonautograph invented by Leon Scott in 1857

So wonderful, such an interesting concept for the kids to learn. Bet none of their friends even know what a phonograph is!

This is wonderful. It gave me a big smile all the way through the video. Your happy boys are so lucky to have such a father.

This is so cool! I can now build my own! So great that the boys get to help and learn along the way. I will like and subscribe :)

yeah, the tinfoil phonograph wasn't designed to carve its own grooves it had grooves in the Mandrell so the foil just had to be pushed in by the needle by the vibrations to form the recording so, thank you for showing this it was a great experiment!!

Nic dziwnego, że w XIX i XX wieku tak powszechna była wiara w duchy😂

It was a terrible thing to listen to by today's standards, but back in 1877 through the early 20th century people would stand in long lines just to be able to say they heard a "talking machine"! It was something they considered miraculous! It is impossible for us today to understand just how amazing it was to, for the first time in history, be able to record and play back sound.

I tried to make this phonograph but i didn't used a cylinder, i put the aluminium foil on a cd to record the voice, like a gramophone, and it works!!!

Awesome experiment! It feels almost like magical, but it's obviously science. Three questions by the way: so, to reproduce what you recorded - what are you exactly doing? That'd be great to understand. Are you turning the cylinder the other way? and also, for each take you had to put new aluminum foil right? It is so interesting! Thank you for sharing, great content!

Great! Thanks for the demo. Now I know what's going on inside my Edison phono.

I still don’t even understand how it captures sound like wtf lol. Even if it could some how produce what you’re saying, how does it capture the actual sound of voice..so crazy..nice video!

I still dont understand how the needle can act as such a straight interface, meaning that the scratches that the needle makes, really do match the sound recorded.

Pozdro z Polski! Ale przydałby się bardziej szczegółowy tutorial do budowy

How did you make a hole in glass? In that jar

Would rubber work instead of an iron jar lid? I figured that it would probably record the sounds better since it's more stretchy, but I fear its not strong enough to etch on the tin foil.
