Why NO ONE Plays League Of Legends

League of Legends has become the newest target of ensh*ttification as of late. Following a series of reprehensible decisions made by the head individuals of Riot Games, player goodwill for the game has been rapidly deteriorating, which ultimately culminated in widespread outrage when they made the asinine decision to remove Hextech Chests from the game. Though they have since backtracked on their decision, the intent was loud and clear, causing a considerable number of players to quit playing the game and/or supporting the company altogether. I've always entertained the idea of making a Why NO ONE Plays League as a joke, but I think it's worth doing this in, unfortunately, a more serious manner.

A week or so after scripting this video, Riot went and backtracked on their decision to remove Hextech Chests. But frankly, I don't think they're deserving of any forgiveness and acknowledgment whatsoever. This is not me being indignant for the sake of it. Riot has done nothing to deserve reconciliation from us. From a public relations point of view, when you make a mistake you have to do more than reverse that mistake to earn player goodwill back. The fact that they reinstated a nerfed version of the hextech/blue essence/etc. systems the game had before they were taken away should paint a very clear message that Riot ONLY did that for the purposes of damage control. They haven't demonstrated any intention of changing their course of direction, and the playerbase should continue voicing their grievances at the serious display of enshittification League has been experiencing over the past few years. More than reimplementing the benefits they took away, they need to show real, meaningful change to prove they truly care about the playerbase and the game's future. Right now, they simply don't.

Funny how enshittification always begins when a finance bro is put in charge. It's probably just a coincidence though.

I’m currently taking a business class, and right now we’re talking about unethical practices that harm consumers. Well guess who the professor used as an example last week?

If you'd tell me, riot was bought by EA, i wouldn't even doubt you from how things are going right now.

For me, what ticked me off was the response from riot. The script for the first dev update where they doubled down on the chest removal was disgusting. Not just because they doubled down, but because their rhetoric was self pitying and full of corporate speak. Poor riot was losing money for giving their player skins for free. Ignore the revenue made from the ahri skin and gacha/chroma scams. "Unsustainable" and "this isnt about profit/bottom line" is such a joke. If the same monetary system was working for a decade, even allowed you to have the "biggest budget ever", how the hell is that unsustainable? Then, all of a sudden, they're surprised chests were important to the community? We expressed that before the first video. It's not about the free rewards (chest reward probabilities were never great), this is about a company disrespecting and telling their audience to shut up and pay. Hopefully the players who spend every so often will realize this. We kinda won the battle with chests, but we didn't win the war yet. There's gonna be more enshittification. Great vid, ty for reading my rant.

Riot balancing champions? Nah. Riot balancing their bank account? Now that's a masterpiece.

Can't believe it's come to this. I don't play, anymore, but have some wonderful memories with friends. Feels like the community and the company feed off each other, tbh. If the community is good and positive, having fun, the company should innovate to match that energy.

The chest thing was personally the last straw for me. I ended up just not playing, even though they are back I have no desire to go back.

To the people saying that Vars doesn't like league, or is a hater, ect. To completely disregard everything positive video this guy has created about league, (there is an entire series called why everyone plays) the depth of knowledge he has about this game and it's mechanics. To listen to a Billion+ dollar company say "we're removing this feature because it isn't sustainable" only to reinstate the "unsustainable" mechanic with a slightly better rate and say Vars is a hater is just so wild. Y'all aren't dumb, this is like a "league is all I have" response. Y'all are so weird for shilling for a company that has blatantly spat in the face of its player base for profit instead of wanting much better from them. Couldn't be me.

The only reason the chests are back is because people got angry and voiced their outrage.

Y'all are weird.

I still cant understand why gacha is not gambling in so many countrys. I mean you pay something, and you dont know what you get. You just hope for something good. That is 100% gambling.

The other insult I didn't see addressed here is that not only are these skins with huge price tags present, but they are practically shoved down the players throats. I remember when you opened the launcher and it had some news, or maybe the new champion's art. Pretty simple stuff. I haven't played in a few months, so I don't know if it's continued, but that Faker Ahri skin just overwhelmed the entire home page of the launcher. It was so flashy and obnoxious, but also inescapable. I just got so sick at looking at Riot pushing a $500 item.

Crazy how a companies shit actions can ruin the soul of a game. We all witnessed it happen with Overwatch. HUGE game, which is still the same gameplay at its core many years later, but just feels empty and hollow now. League is going the same route. Them having 250 and 500 dollar skins in the game, yes, does not actually affect you, but just knowing that they put it there and why they put it there puts this sour feeling in the back of your mind.

The thing about chests being removed that gets me is that it really doesn't affect the average player on a monetary level. It just reduces satisfaction.

Like yeah, they might get lucky and get the new legendary skin for their main but I'd bet my salary that at least 85.6% of the normal players just outright buy the skins they like when they're introduced or go on sale.

But you know who this does affect?

Skin Collectors. Those with almost every skin unlocked who can open a chest or two then reroll shards to complete their collection. Sure, they have the shard stockpile now, but when that dries up, it's buying the pass or the gacha or more chests or more orbs or more-

Think about it from the perspective of a corporation who NEEDS the line to go up.

Why would you WANT to have your paypigs, the people who will bend over backwards to give you money, to be rewarded with the privilege of giving you less money?

All I can think about is that one Rioter that was complaining that Skin Collectors eventually get every new release for free instead of having to continue to pay up like a good "little" whale.

I don't think the average player was even factored into the decision, I think they were just seen as "necessary collateral" to keep Captain Ahab polishing the harpoon.

Being held captive by league for years, the game died to me when Marvel Rivals dropped and I watched them improve the game within a day when they recieved large amounts of feedback (many times).

Nothing Riot could do would make me believe theyll listen to feedback like that, so I'm not going back.

Worthy to note that before the faker ahri skin came out, riot sold the 125$ Dark star Jhin Chroma (launched in august of 2023)

I like how riot backtracked on the chests and was like "we hear you and we're gonna do better" then immediately put the new battle academia skins on PBE that are reusing old assets again while chargin more for less, AND a prestige skin that doesn't even look like a prestige skin. they haven't learned a damn thing
